NBC counter-strike against Heroes’ hiatus

By fred | July 30, 2007

Unlike most people is seems, I do have mixed feelings about this. Sure, bringing more new content to the fans is a good thing. But it seems Kring went back to his original idea of having a new set of characters each season, which also implies than none of what we’ll actually see during Origins will be related to the actual “main” show that is Heroes, not directly.

It will feature different characters, and different stories. So it won’t really be Heroes, and as a fan of the show there’s no guarantee this show will be as good/interesting, but more importantly all characters and stories from the then-current season of Heroes won’t be addressed here, it will still feel like a hiatus, because really, it is.

Oddly enough, having fans of the show making decisions on what will happen, decisions that will most likely have a huge impact of the whole thing, might not be such a good idea. Fans can be wrong, very wrong even at times. And I always feel better when writers know where they want to go and what they want to do with the show and its characters, than when they’re being “asked” to adjust their creative choices to go with a network thoughts, or fans desires.

Call me what you want, but the greatest thing to feel when watching a show like, say, Lost, is not to have our expectations met, and fast, but instead have writers challenge them, us, and putting our beliefs into questions.
To do that, you simply cannot follow what fans what, you have to have your own agenda and go along with it. Doesn’t mean never listen to fans, or don’t let yourself be influenced by their opinions, but giving them that much power over the show might not be such a smart move.

The more I see and learn about Heroes, the less I feel good about it, and the more worried I am about the next season and the whole future of the show. (Pretty much the opposite than with Lost, guess I really have chosen my side on this one, although that was far from being a tough choice.)

We’ll see, maybe I will be nicely surprised by it all. I’d be the first one to like that.

A good news in that way was the announce by Kring that Kevin Smith, a fan of the show, would not only be the first director of Heroes: Origins but also write it. I wonder if they’re gonna let other directors get involve in the whole writing process as well…
