Moonlight is coming back, or something…

By fred | August 15, 2008

Alex O'LoughlinRemember folks, if you liked Moonlight it was only because you liked to look at Alex O’Loughlin, nothing more, dixit CBS President Nina Tassler. So as far as she’s concerned, you’ll all be delighted to know that Moonlight O’Loughlin is coming back, or you know, not leaving CBS, and you’ll all tune in when he’ll be back on CSI: San Diego or whatever that new show will be called.

I have a strong feeling that’s not really the case, but facts remains the same : according to Hollywood Reporter the Australian actor signed a one-year talent holding deal with the network, sister studio CBS Paramount TV and ABC Studios.

According to this new deal, O’Loughlin is set to star in a new series project for CBS that has yet to be determined. The project will be developed by TV producer Mark Gordon, whose ABC Studio-based company is behind such series as ABC’s Grey’s Anatomy, Lifetime’s Army Wives or more importantly CBS’ Criminal Minds. Since we’re talking CBS here, this new series should probably be some kind of CSI spinoff or something, unless they intend to cancel the show after a few episodes of course…

He was a P.I., he’ll be a cop of some sort, same difference, I’m sure no one will even notice it’s another show. Except if you have a brain you’re not Mrs Tassler…

Well I can’t believe it either, but a person has to make a living. Something we “normal” people have to realize is this: actors are nomads..they go where the work is..and if they’re not “A” list actors who can pick and choose the parts they want, they probably will take any job that’s respectable and could enhance their career.

So we “normal” folk find it hard to “trust” but I think it’s an actor’s “way of life”. My only consolation is this: by him staying within CRAP BS network’s grasp, perhaps, perhaps they’ll let someone else handle Moonlight and resurrect it again……but that’s doubtful.

I love Alex and his acting and wish him the best for his career. Whatever it is CrapBS has planned for him, I hope they give him the respect he deserves because he worked his ass off for Moonlight and treated him like shit.

Fred, you crack me up! Except of course if you have a brain, indeed! But I don’t get it. Is CBS associated with ABC somehow? If so, do you think bombarding ABC to pick up Moonlight would do any good?

    Fred:
Wait, I get it! It wasn’t the fans that were Alex centric… It was Ms. Tassler. She wanted him for something that she could control. Makes perfect sense.

Networks work with other studios all the time for producing shows, not always at the benefit of the shows.

As for bombarding ABC, that probably wouldn’t help since it was produced by Warner ;)

In fact, from what I understand even though Moonlight was relatively “cheap” there was some money issue that led to its cancellation : basically CBS wanted WB to step up more financially, to which WB replied they would if CBS did too, which they didn’t wanna to obviously, so the show was canceled instead.

    As Nikki Finke reported:

Moonlight has been fraught with problems. But CBS’ Nina Tassler told the producers that she was “very happy” with the direction of the series. The show pitched her the stories for all next season, “and Nina loved them”. And then CBS gave the show its list of what the network wanted. But CBS made clear that the renewal of the show was “all going to be dependent on making the last four shows of this season ratings-wise. Well, those ratings were only fair. They didn’t win the night, but they won their demos. On the other hand, Friday’s ratings are always low. But the real story is, as usualy in Hollywood, all about the money. Even though comparatively Moonlight is being done on the cheap (especially when put up against another WBTV show, Pushing Daisies on ABC, which is a notoriously expensive production), and was picked up in the beginning by CBS for a relatively low licensing fee, CBS now wants Warner Bros to pick up more of the tab. There was a specific conversation between the two Big Media outfits about this on Wednesday of last week. “We need you to step up,” CBS reportedly told WB. To which WB responded to CBS, “You step up, and we’ll step up.” Interestingly, I hear that CBS just ordered to series the pilots The Mentalist and 11th hour which both have higher licensing fees than Moonlight. But the producers knew all along that their series was “on the bubble,” so to speak. And iun response to communication pushing the network to pick up Moonlight, I understand rthat CBS responded to the effect, “Where’s WB? Why won’t they step up?”

While I still mourn for Moonlight, I’ll take Alex anywhere, any way, any time, any channel. Can’t wait to see his beautiful face once again on TV. He’ll have millions of fans waiting to tune in for his show’s premiere.

I’m very happy to see that CBS recognizes what a wonderful talent they have in Alex O’Loughlin and that they did not let him slip through their fingers. Can’t wait to hear more information about this new series but all signs look very positive since it’s the same producers who did “Grey’s Anatomy” and “Criminal Minds” as well as that new hit “Army Wives.” Hopefully, the show can be developed to make it into the 2009-10 CBS Fall Schedule.

Thanks Fred. I hate being taken for an idiot, and I have to admit that the continuous addition of insults to injury from N. Tassler and some blog writers has been getting on my nerves. I mean, Titanic wasn’t really that great either, right, it was just that these silly groupies were di-Caprio-centric?!
Thanks for crediting us with a brain man, and showing us that we’re not the only ones after all.

While I’m very glad that Alex found another project to work on, I will not be returning to CBS for any show. Every time I bother to get involved with a show, they take it away. I just don’t see the point anymore. Though, I have to admit, I am looking forward to the dvd set coming out. I tell you this much, every night will have Moonlight in it when that happens :)

    Olá Fred,
It is good to hear Alex is under a network’ scrutiny although it’s CBS!
They know he is good and a lot like in Europe with soccer players when clubs notice someone’s quality they secure it in the best way possible! Let’s just hope they give him enough space and quality to work with.
I think he is a terrific actor and I really love him as Mick St. John (I’m sure I will always cherish Moonlight and all the emotions I experience trough it), nevertheless Alex, in order to survive and improve his work, needs to be working (what a redundancy!!!).
We all know talent isn’t enough to make a difference and in order to achieve our purposes we must give it all and by saying this I mean 99% work and 1% talent/luck.
I became acquainted with him trough Moonlight then I saw The Shield and Feed and some little videos at YT but I want more.
I’m eager to see his next work and hopefully I will have the opportunity to enjoy his work and maybe I will also be fortunate enough to have him in more that 16 episodes.
I truly hope he is given the opportunity to show how good he is and who knows one day we will get Moonlight again.

    Beijinhos,
    Flora

    p.s. 1 these words are also worthy to Sophia (Beth), Jason (Josef) and the rest of the brilliant cast I love so much;

Great article! I agree–CBS has been “clueless” for too long and it has to stop. (Actually, this fault in their logic will soon turn back on them and bite them in their smarmy A$$!) Why spend the money, time and effort to put out a new show and then give it the axe before it has a chance to show what it can do? In the sad case of “Moonlight, which was put in a bad time slot, was not promoted very well, was rushed to the screen moments after canning the first cast, re-cast, dumped the pilot, put it out there without refining it to perfection–yet ater all of that, Moonlight still built a “rabid” fanbase, won the People’s Choice Award for best new drama, got rave reviews from many well respected reviewers, TV Guide included, and CBS STILL killed it–after only 16 episodes which didn’t air during the writers strike! Nina Tassler’s excuse is worse than ridiculous! “Actorcentric?” Isn’t that what the network dreams of? Did any of us watch Magnum PI for anyone other than Tom Selleck? The list is long of successful “actorcentric” shows, and Moonlight was heading toward HUGE success! Cut down in its “freshman” season after promises of a Season Two? Insane!

CBS will find out just how dedicated its viewers are to this show when nobody is tuning in this fall. Oh, I ADORE Alex O’Loughlin, and when he is in a project NOT associated with the BAD BLACK EYE, I will watch it! But I can’t watch a new show on a network that will only kill its baby after a few episodes. I don’t trust CBS. For years they have been my network of choice, but no longer! My TiVo is programmed NOT to record CBS! And Alex? All I can say is–Hurry up and get a Moonlight movie going! We fans want you back, but we want you in Moonlight before you start another project–before CBS turns you into another CSI or game show host! The beautiful Moonlight story is not finished–I know–I moderate a thread at CBS and we have 100 pages of “Unanswered Questions!” Finish Moonlight, and your fans will ALL be back, and will bring with them all of the Twilight fans and the rest of the vampire genre-crazed viewers!

Thanks Fred for treating us Moonlight fans with respect. I really love Alex O’Loughlin and I wish him all the best. But, I’m afraid “all the
best” won’t have anything to do with CBS. They are too big in their own minds to care about quality tv or even their own viewers. They were too stupid to notice the current vampire craze and actually notice that they were the only ones who were ahead of the game. They had the only vampire show on the air. And to let it go because of money (which they have plenty of-they are the still the #1 net), and executive politics is just short-sighted and brainless decision making!

I am very sad that Moonlight won’t be back on. I thought that it was a great series. I don’t even light Vampire series but I loved this one.
