Lost: Stop Making Lists Of Questions, Here’s Your Answer!
By fred | January 31, 2008
Okay there’s one thing I want to say before Lost comes back : lately as we’re all waiting for the new season to premiere, people all over the place have been compiling and making their lists. Everyone has his own list of questions about Lost, his lists of mysteries and things unknown that they want, or demand even, answers to. I’ve been reading non-stop the top 8 question that this season has to answer, or the 15 mysteries that must be answered or else (or else what? exactly!), and quite frankly I’ve been annoyed by such lists, and especially the tone of some of them, very quickly.
There are two reasons that those kind of lists made me mad, basically. For starter, I love Lost, I think it’s one of the best thing on television that we’ve seen for years, and I have been the first one to criticize it when it got bad, and somewhere during the second season I got pissed and my faith was fading away more and more with time, I was getting convinced that the men behind the curtains of that show had no clue about anything, pretty much like us.
And I still have my complaints, I too want to know why they stopped caring about Claire’s baby that fast after being obsessed with it for one season, I too want to know what the Hell that four-toed statue is about, I too have all those questions any fan of the show has, but I have also faith in the show and the people behind it.
I do not because I want to, well maybe a little, but I do because lats season - despite a shitty start, granted - last season was still one fantastic season, it might even be the best season of the show so far. It really was, there was development, things were moving forward and yes, there were answers given out. Sure, with Lost each answer bring 16 more questions, but we had answers, still.
And what ABC re-aired last night, the season finale with the introduction of a flash-forward, those episodes were nothing but brilliant. Those two hours were some of the best hours television ever had to offer its audience, it was amazing, it was mind-blowing, and after such a season and such a finale you need to have a little faith that writers of the show will not keep pulling the magic turtle card but that they know where they want to go. You have to, because if you can’t give them credits after last season, the problem isn’t with them, it isn’t with Lost, it is with you.
They obviously have a plan, and they intend to bring answers to everything one way or another, I’m sure of it. They know how dedicated and obsessed fans of the show are, they know they’ll have to give answers if they don’t want to be burned alive in the streets, so your little lists are not doing anything.
That’s the first reason you should stop demanding answers from this season. The second season is all on you : we are NOT going to see the fourth season of Lost.
We are not, because writers had their minds to bring us answer over three more seasons, three seasons of 16 episodes each. And so they had thought this season has made out of 16 episodes, but then came the WGA strike and everything was put in jeopardy. Only half of the season was completed, and there was a question for ABC : what to do now ?
Should they air the only 8 episodes that had been completed, and make this season only half of what it was supposed to be, something that hadn’t been thought that was but to be followed by another 8 episodes, or should they wait to have the full package ?
Obviously, they have chosen to air whatever they could. But so have many people. I for one have been against that idea from the start, I wanted them to wait, I was totally ready and willing to wait a few more months, if it meant I could have the full season as writers intended them, it it meant it’d be as great as last season one. I thought that most fans would feel the same, yet mostly all they wanted was to get their new Lost back as soon as possible.
So there you go, it’s back on, tonight. But it is not the full season, and they already said that this season was meant to be a first half, made of 8 episodes, those we are going to see, where things were going to be set in motion, where decisions would be made, and it was the other half of the season, it was the 8 episodes we won’t get to see that were meant to bring us answers, to focus on the consequences of everything done before.
I’m not saying nothing will happen during those eight episodes, of course not, I’m saying you have no right to complain that there aren’t enough answers, I’m saying you’ll have no right to complain that the “finale” won’t be as great as last season, and it won’t, because it wasn’t supposed to be a season finale, it was supposed to be nothing but one episode like the others, one episode in the middle of the season.
Don’t get me wrong, I’m really excited that Lost is coming back, of course I am, I love the show. But let’s not forget that this isn’t the season we were supposed to get, this isn’t even a full season, and if you voted to air whatever was done instead of waiting for the full season to be completed, I don’t think you have the right to complain if that season don’t bring you any closure or answers the way you’d have wanted it to.
With that said, I’m sure those eight episodes will be great, and hopefully there will be answers already, like what about that magic turtle :
