Life On Mars canceled

By fred | March 3, 2009

Life On MarsThe news is out : the US version of Life On Mars has been canceled. Or, as they like to put it, it will not be renewed. The difference being mostly that all 17 episodes will be produced and aired, ABC pinky-swore on that one (of course they also did the same thing back when we were talking Pushing Daisies or Eli Stone, but so far sources seem to believe they will do it this time…), and they managed to get the word out soon enough that producers/writers of the show will be able to give fans a conclusion, turning the last episode into a real series finale where they can reveal what the Hell was happening to Sam and why…

Certainly this isn’t good news, as the show was a quality one, but this isn’t any surprising either given how the ratings weren’t all that good, which might also be linked to the fact that they never really were big on the main issue, and instead we got to follow Sam through his daily routine of a cop in 1973 which, simply, isn’t all that interesting – nor is it what people wanted to see our of this show.

Hopefully now things will get better by the end as we’ll get all the answers we need, and ABC will really go on and air the remaining episodes. And, en passant, if someone could remind them that some of us are still waiting to see the last episodes of aforementioned Pushing Daisies or Eli Stone, that could only be appreciated.

It’s sad to see the show go, but I surely won’t be missing it as much as, say, Journeyman I think.

Now, how do you mostly feel right now about this : disappointed, surprised, resigned, or somewhat happy to know you’ll get the answers you’ve been waiting for ? And what do you put your money on? Personally, I’m still gonna stick with the coma theory…

Ive seen every episode but lately its been more a chore than anything. I dvr it and by saturday its still there and Im like “ok, fine, I’ll watch”. And as usual Im disappointed in it. Luckily they will resolve the time travel thing which really was the only interesting aspect of the show.

    Problems
    - Keitel was just wrong for the part
    - Sam was just at times too dumb and willing to accept everything.
    - Some episodes were just plain beyond awful – (the johnny sac one)

    Highlights
    - Chris moltisanti was def the star of the show
    - gretchen mol wasnt half bad either
    - Some episodes were decent- the recent one with the rockstar was pretty good. It was able to balance the time travel stuff and cop stuff pretty well.

All in all, def not sad to see it go. And i totally agree on journeyman, what a great show.

Yeah, the fact that Sam seemed often simply accepting on his condition and not caring to find out what was happening to him, why or how to get back was pretty annoying.

Some episodes were quite awful, but others pretty good. I think my favorite episode might be the one with the hostage situation in the hospital (Tuesday’s Dead)…

Overall I feel pretty much the same, there’s a quality and potential to this show, but as I kept tuning in I always wondered when it would finally really focus on what was happening to Sam and get really interesting…

Let’s hope the finale will be good and deliver on that part.
