Late Night Shows Are Back, Part I : Letterman
By fred | January 3, 2008
Alright people, so it was the big night with (almost) all late night talk-shows going back on the air, some with the writers, most without. I’ve talked about the whole thing and expressed my feelings regarding every host what what hoped I had in the past, but now that everything actually took place let’s have a look back at what actually happened.
We’ll go over each shows, focusing on the “monologues”, or introductions of all shows, as well as how things went down overall. Some things were great, others were not. I fact, some things I absolutely hated… but we’ll talk about all of that. For all show I’ve also included videos of the opening, so let’s start it off with, of course, the man himself : David Letterman.
So Letterman was back, wearing a strike-beard as well, and one thing for sure was that he seemed to really enjoy himself. And what would he not, he worked a deal to get his writers back, he’s fully on with WGA blessing, that puts him in a much better position than everybody else, his show is “above” all the competition thanks to his effort and the deal he’s worked out, he knows it and he’s having a great time being back in such a “comfortable” position.
The show started by a little cameo by candidate Hillary Clinton : “Dave’s been off the air for eight long weeks because of the writers strike. Tonight he’s back. Oh well; All good things come to an end!” Now that was actually funny, and while almost all candidates have publicly said themselves supportive of the strike, some had no problems crossing picket lines to appear on late night shows, like Mike Huckabee who was a guest on Leno.
But back on Letterman, even though they have worked out a deal with the WGA, they are all fully aware that the situation hasn’t been resolved, that writers are still striking and that a global deal still has to be signed so that each and every of the great people out there without a job, striking writers or not, can go back to work.
And Letterman of course make sure to mention the strike, coming in while WGA picket lines had been set up right there on the set, although they traded the usual writers wearing coats for some very leggy ones, but hey it’s TV!
