In Treatment renewed for a second season !

By fred | June 21, 2008

In TreatmentWe’ve already talked about it when it was rumored that the HBO “experiment”, In Treatment, might come back for a second season, and now it’s a done deal !

As said then, this new season will see executive producer/showrunner Warren Leight in charge. Leight, who has spent the past few seasons as executive producer of Law & Order: Criminal Intent, recently inked a deal with the network. The half-hour drama is moving production from Los Angeles to New York (where Byrne lives), where production is expected to start in the fall, and it is expected to return to the air in 2009.

Returning for a second season are Paul (Gabriel Byrne), of course, and his own therapist Gina (Dianne Wiest). Other than that, a couple of patients might make brief appearances in a handful of episodes, but they won’t be coming back. The new season should see a batch of new patients coming in to see Paul.

But if the first season was 43 episode long, with a 5 days a week schedule, the second season won’t be. Given that ratings for the Monday-Friday premiere telecasts were not too strong, HBO is expected to order “only” around 35 episodes for the second season, and while there’s no words on the schedule for this season, it might not be as “intensive” as the first one was, possibly down to 4 days a week.

The first season in In Treatment was overall pretty good, some patients/stories were stronger than others but we had plenty of goods, and lots of quite amazing performances, starting with Gabriel Byrne of course, or Mia Wasikowska who was nothing but brilliant.

That said, is is a demanding show, not only because each half-hour is usually pretty heavy, but also because it was a 5 half-hour a week commitment. Did you watch the first season of In Treatment ? And if so, every episode, or only for the patients you liked best ? Now that a second season is coming, will you be willing to invest in problems of new patients for a second season ?

I did indeed watch the first season of In Treatment — and every single episode. In fact I blogged each episode the day it ran. I am a therapist and though it was a bit of a busman’s holiday to watch it, I liked the show a lot. I am delighted to know it will be back. And I will blog each episode again.

this is a fabulous and riveting series. with moral dilemmas left and right and perfect character portrayals, it wasn’t at all too much of a time commitment for me. i’m thrilled that HBO has renewed it, and i also feel that it will find its audience.

I kept my HBO because of In Treatment. I cannot wait till the new season begins. I would watch it 7 days a week. It was absolutely riveting!

My boyfriend and I watched every single episode ( and even reruns) and enjoyed it so much that it often came up in our day-to-day conversations. We still find ourselves asking…now, what would Paul do in this situation?

Delighted to have the show back!

I found “In Treatment” to be interesting. Even when I wanted to not watch, I was compelled to see what happened next. Therefore I am looking forward to the second season. However, NOTHING compares to Showtimes “DEXTER”. It is the absolute best!!! It’s intriguing, funny, sadistic and wildly entertaining. It’s more shamefully addictive than HBO’s Entourage and Big Love- which I love.

In Treatment was the best thing on television since the Sopranos. I signed up for full cable because of The Sopranos and am staying because of In Treatment. I was surprised to see it only get one Emmy nomination. Gabriel Byrne was brilliant, believable, and very much a sympathetic character. This is brilliant writing supporting a brilliant premise. I watched the show religiously. I am so curious about who the future cases will be. It will be a hard season to beat but I know they will do it. Bravo!
