Hugh Laurie could have hosted the Emmy…

By fred | September 4, 2007

Stephen Fry and Hugh LaurieThat’s right, before deciding to go for American Idol’s Ryan Seacrest as a host, Fox considered to naming some else for the job. And not just anyone, nor yet another stupid face, no the one who was - in fact - their original choice was no other that Hugh Laurie, Dr Gregory House himself.

That’s right, Laurie was considered for hosting the show, and was the original choice even. Not only that, but I believe he was the right choice - or at least, a much better one. But while some Fox executives were pushing for Laurie, others thought the “most logical choice” was Seacrest.

Because he already hosts America’s most popular regular TV show, and some specials for the network, like their New Year’s Eve countdowns.

And when finally they made their decision, they went for the Idol star because they felt Seacrest would draw a larger TV audience, which isn’t true, and because they thought, hear this out, viewers might be confused seeing Laurie in an unfamiliar role.

To that I say, “we - viewers - aren’t as retarded as you are and seem to think we are, we know what an actor is. We know Hugh Laurie isn’t really a doctor, or American for that matter. Just like we know Matthew Fox isn’t really Lost on some mysterious Island, Jack Bauer isn’t really out there hunting God knows who, and G.W. Bush isn’t really in charge!” Damn it!

What the hell is wrong with all those execs thinking one might not see an actor in more than one role, or else it’d be confusing too much and brains would explode. Whenever I see a movie starring George Clooney I don’t wonder people aren’t calling him Doctor Ross. And I’m not alone, I mean even back in the days, seeing him at some red carpet event, people were screaming “George”, not “Doug” !

And by the way, I should mention that Hugh Laurie had a pretty amazing and successful career long before he join Fox as Dr House. Amongst other thing he was a great performer on A Bit Of Fry And Laurie, the outrageous comedy sketch show he did between 1986 and 1995 with Stephen Fry, on the BBC.

And believe me, he would have done a much better job that Seacrest could ever dream of accomplishing.

And for those of you who might be a little skeptic, image this : Hugh Laurie, a piano, and no more than three words. Doesn’t sound hilarious? Well it is, he bloody is!
