How I Met Your Mother : A Clue About The Mother ?

By fred | May 7, 2008

How I Met Your MotherIn the past I’ve compared How I Met Your Mother to Lost, like sure many others did. It hard not to, when both are great shows, use both flashbacks and flash-forwards, put in episodes references to past and future episodes to please the fans, and are filled with mysteries.

Of course, there’s - to me - one gigantic difference : I don’t care that much about who the mother is ! I’m sure many fans do, but I just don’t. And it’s not just because given the show’s name and premise - Future Ted telling his kids how he met, guess who, their mother! - it means that once Ted met her, the show is done, it’s also because, unlike Lost, the show is really not about the mysteries.

Still, now we can add another similarities between the two shows : fans watching frame by frame for clues !

Of course it’s not surprising to hear that the one who found out about this at Seat42f is actually a fan of Lost as well. And as you can see on the picture below, it seems that one little handwritten letter has been spotted in two places at the same time, one in 2007 in Stella’s apartment, and the other in 2030 in Future Ted’s apartment. So the question is, since this seems to be the same letter : why is it in Ted’s place in 2030 ??

How I Met Your Mother

Of course, everyone will think Stella is the mother. As I said before, I simply believe this cannot be the case, and here are the main reasons :

- Future Ted should have ended the first time with a “And that, kids, is how I met your mother”

- If she was the mother, the kids would have recognize her. I’m not one who believes that everything we see, Future Ted tell his kids. Because sometimes it’s not really the kind of stories you tell your kids about (”Hey kids, want to know about the Tricycle ?”) Still, if their father talks about how he met a girl who looks like their mom, goes by the same name as their mom, as a child about the same age and by the same name as their mom, I mean what else do they need to recognize their mother !?

- If she’s the mother, Future Ted would have just said it, and the show be over. What’s the point of telling your kids a story, and go on and on and on for hours, only to go, after a while : “oh, remember what I told you two hours ago ? Well that’s what I meant to tell you.”

I’m still thinking the mother will be a friend of Stella or, probably (?), Stella’s sister. Of course, to keep on the Lost analogy, this might just be a prop error, and people using the same stuff twice without thinking people would be crazy enough to watch the show frame by frame, in high-def, and spot such a little thing…

Anyways, still a cool thing to notice. So, what do you think : is this an error or a clue ? Is Stella the mother ? Is it her sister ? A friend ? Someone else completely ?
