Horizon Media makes predictions about next season’s successes and failures

By fred | July 8, 2008

FringeFall season is still month away, but if you’re a TVoholic if probably wonder which series will be a hit, and which will die before the end of the year ?

Of course no one really knows, but Horizon Media loves to speculate and, in their annual television report, go ahead and make their predictions. Sadly I haven’t read that report nor do I really know what they base their predictions on (did they saw the pilots for all series??), but let’s talk about it anyways, shall we?

Of course, the number one hit of next season goes to Fox, with J.J. Abrams’ Fringe. Now that an easy one, I think we can all agree on that one, it’s a no-brainer. According to Hollywood Reporter, HM predicts that the second highest-rated new show will be CBS’ Eleventh Hour.

I’m not really sure about that one. Of course, I haven’t seen the pilot, unlike Fringe, but it didn’t look that good/exciting to me, and one could also wonder whether or not it might sound a little to close to Fringe, people might compare the two shows, and in such a fight, if there can only be one, it will be Fringe.

So far I would be more into The Mentalist (yes, really), but of course facing Fringe won’t really help the show.

That was for the best, now the worst. NBC’s Kath & Kim and CBS’ Worst Week are expected to be the weak links, and I think that’s likely. Not sure about how Worst Week will turn out, but I wouldn’t be surprised to see Project Gary perform much less. Sure, the former might be on a tougher plot, but it also comes after CBS’ number one comedy, Two And A Half Men.

No words on hour-long drama doing bad, but I pray for Knight Rider and Crusoe, or any new show on NBC for that matter.

The analysis contains some expected claims, such as established hits like ABC’s Grey’s Anatomy or NBC’s Heroes will continue to rule their time periods. All of that seems good to me too, I mean last season of Heroes sucked and I have no faith in the show or Tim Kring anymore, at all (anyone wanna bet Nathan isn’t dead, and neither is Niki ?), but things are probably even worse when it comes down to Prison Break, so…

The report seem to think Fox’s Do Not Disturb will break out, and more surprisingly see ABC taking over CBS on Friday nights ! Now I have to say, I don’t see this happening, and look at ABC’s Friday nights schedule - Wife Swap, Supernanny, 20/20 - I really hope it won’t happen. The report also does not expect one new series to win its time period in the adults 18-49 demographic, which I think will be proven wrong. At least I’ll give Fringe the leadership on Tuesdays at 9.00 — with House as a lead-in, this is a big hit for Fox, including on the demo.

The analysis also put the adaptation of Life On Mars in the top-rated new series, though they don’t see it doing better than E.R. on at the same time on NBC. What does that say ? That except for a couple of good ones, new series aren’t all that exciting… which is true. In fact, taking out of the equation Dollhouse, as they did since it’s a mid-season show, and Fringe, and there’s nothing to be really excited about, is there?
