Hawaii Five-O: Oh great, another cop-drama coming to CBS !

By fred | August 12, 2008

Hawaii Five-OJesus, this network is really not exciting at all. I’m not sure what it is they are trying to accomplish at CBS, become the most-watched network again, get more young viewers, I don’t know, but I’m pretty sure this isn’t working for me. Like, at all.

The Eye is already filled with (almost) nothing but cop-dramas all over the place, with dozens of CSI’s and then plenty of other cop shows, with or without a “twist”, so you could think maybe they have enough of it already, especially when it’s been going on for so long, you’d think maybe they’d want to try new things, pull out the creativity card and try new things, but alas, no.

Well, truth be told sometimes it looks like they do, but whenever they put such a show on the air, and regardless of its quality, they cancel it within the year. It’s like they wanna look like they’re trying, but all they really care about, are cop shows…

Case in point, a few days after learning that CBS was ordering a script for a remake of the 70’s classic The Streets Of San Francisco, now it’s been revealed that they have yet another remake in store for us.

This time, Criminal Minds‘ executive producer and showrunner Ed Bernero is said to be working on a new take on another 70’s classic cop show, Hawaii Five-O.

I’m sure Bernero - who might also be busy with that other possible project of his, a Criminal Minds spinoff, because CBS just loves cop dramas and don’t have no imagination whatsoever - I’m sure Bernero has plenty of ideas for that new series, but I for one don’t care. Much like with The Streets Of San Francisco it’s not that I didn’t watch/like the original, it’s that there’s more than enough cop shows out there, I’ve seen my share and I keeping watching some (especially when they’re not really cop shows but wonderful brilliant piece of art, I’m of course talking about the fantastic NBC series Life), but that’s just not what I’m looking for on TV.

CBS is pretty much nothing but a network with cop shows these days, NBC is just getting worse and worse every day - I mean, that big joke about how the entire world watched the Olympics opening ceremony live, except for the people in the US who got to watch it “live” as per NBC definition, which is something like “live from a pre-recorded tape” or something, aka with a big fat 12h delay… - that’s just sad, laughable, and pathetic.

Is it me, or does it look like not only the most exciting network but also the one who respects the shows and their viewers the best is now Fox ? That one network who trashed the greatest (sci-fi) piece of art to grace our screens ever, Firefly ? That network who more recently canceled Drive after like only three episodes made it on the air ?? Jesus, this is bad… Thank God we have ABC, who’s still hanging in there, giving Lost an end date and renewing promising series like Pushing Daisies or Eli Stone, otherwise this would be a sign of the apocalypse, for sure.

CBS says it wants buzz. But what it really wants are shows that are reliable performers in syndication and shows that are easy to sell to advertisers in one or two words (CSI!! In a different town!! CSI!! In the military!!). CBS finds serialized dramas to be annoying to promote or sell, and is condescending to the fans of serialized shows. It’s a very aged business model. The fact is that syndication will be basically irrelevant soon with services like Hulu.com. Contrast CBS’s attitude with ABC: ABC loves buzz, and really knows how to promote serialized dramas. However, their slate of shows is seeming a little creaky too (DH needing a reboot, etc. with really only Grey’s and Lost having serious caché anymore, and I think the fans of those shows have seemed pretty fickle lately, as well they should). NBC, or Nothing But Crap, is entirely focused on new income streams: eliminating pilot season and product placement are the main focus. I agree with your opinion on Fox. It seems to be cultivating new shows while still protecting its aging assets such as AI and 24. As the former ‘upstart’ network it has had an impressive record of getting great shows in the pipeline but failing to give them an adequate run on the air (see ‘Firefly’, etc.). I don’t know if the CW will make it. They are so undiversified, and their hits are tenuous; people are very wary of the new 90210 and I think Gossip Girl is a slim show to base a network on. I find the cable shows on TNT, FX, USA, etc., to be the far more interesting destinations for serious TV watchers of late. There was a recent article in the New York Times that hinted that Warner Bros is considered spinning itself off from Time Warner (to focus on content rather than delivery through cable and AOL-internet) and was also considering purchasing NBC as an outlet for this content. Now to me that seems like the most interesting news in TV in several years.
