Happy Festivus!

By fred | December 23, 2008

Happy Festivus! Happy Festivus everyone – Now let me tell you how disappointed I am!

That’s how it goes, every 365 days or so when the year comes to an end, right before Christmas, you turn to your loved ones to tell them how they’ve disappointed you again, as goes the good old tradition of the alternate holiday introduced to us by no other than George’s dad, Frank Costanza.

Now make sure your aluminum pole is ready, and let’s have a look at all the things that disappointed us this year in TV land. And as it turns out, disappointments have been legion!

Life

This was simply the greatest thing on television in 2007. Seriously, there wasn’t anything better than this little gem at the time. Then of course came the strike, and NBC’s morons execs decided to mess with the show, and now we’re here, 2008, and a sophomore season that has left many fans of the show wondering what happened.

What happened to Dani? What happened to Charlie? Where did the Zen go? Where its meaning and the power and intensity of the show have gone? Just what happened to the show we loved so much. Now, it’s still there, somewhere, trying to survive, there are encouraging signs, and it remains one of the best thing on TV. But, I have to admit, I was a little disappointed. Probably because I loved the first season so much, but it was all entirely deserved!

House

Yes, I feel the need to mention this show, too, on such a list. This year, I use Festivus to hurt myself it seems. Again, this is a case where I love the show, I do, I am a fan of House, and Hugh Laurie, and it remains one of the best thing on TV — which is why it saddens me to do this, too. Yet I have to, because while the introduction of the hunt for a new team was a wonderful addition last season, this year we noticed something I wouldn’t have thought possible on this show, as it almost backfired.

I hear people have always “hated” Thirteen, and that is not the case with me. In fact, I used to like her from the start and I was glad she made it to the new team. But the obsession of writers to give her more and more screen time is having the opposite reaction, I don’t want to hear anymore of her Huntington, her “wild” life, her will to die, or not, and… what the Hell was that ? Hooking up with Foreman !? Quoting Amy Poehler and Seth Meyers, I have to ask, Really!??

I’ve never missed Cut-throat Bitch as much…

Grey’s Anatomy

To keep in the medical department, and go on a lighter tone. This one doesn’t hurt, as I’ve never been a fan of this show, but it’s been years and for some reason I’m still watching. Although this year more than ever, I have really been asking myself why. I could go on and list the too many things that took place and didn’t make any sense this year, or I could simply mention how Izzie is having sex with… a dead man. Or a ghost. Or nothing but herself. Or something. I don’t even know what the Hell is going on there, but it is the worst thing ever, that’s for sure.

I don’t know if this is revenge over when Katherine Heigl “complained” she wasn’t given good-enough (Emmy-worthy) material or what, but the people who really suffer from this mess, in the end, are of course us, viewers — as always.
