Friday Night Lights renewed, Smallville breaking down…

By fred | March 6, 2008

Friday Night Lights* Good news from all FNL addicts I’m sure : Although nothing has been been made official yet, Nikki Finke is reporting that the show is saved, so you can be sure it is. After airing last season’s finale, NBC wasn’t really willing to renew the show for a third season, because it didn’t perform so well. But it wasn’t a mess, and it’s no Bionic Woman, the show has lots of fans not ready to let their favorite show die.

And after looking for alternative ways to keep the show running, NBC reached a tentative agreement with DirecTV, and things look “more than promising” that Friday Night Lights will indeed be back for a third season in a dual-platform mode this fall. “It’s an innovative deal where NBC found a partner who will share costs and exhibition windows” an insider told Finke.

So both NBC and DirecTV will be airing Friday Night Lights across multipurpose platforms, though no dates or even numbers of episodes have been mentioned so far.

Kristin Kreuk* Meanwhile, if The CW announced recently that they had renewed Smallville for its eighth season, it seems that the show won’t be back as you’ve come to know it.

Rumors have been out for a while know that two original cast members were thinking about leaving the show, and according to TV Guide they’ve indeed decided not to renew their current contracts, coming to an end after the current season.

So no, Kristin Kreuk (Lana Lang) and Michael Rosenbaum (Lex Luthor) will not return as series regulars next year, although they have already mentioned that they are open to doing limited engagements, so they could guest-star in a few episodes next season. No word yet on how they’ll be written out, whether or not they’ll die, but it seems to me that this could mean that next season of Smallville could be the last one…
