Extended Oceanic Six Press Conference: Find Out Who Else Survived The Crash!

So one of the things I was a little “disappointed” not to find out during last night season’s finale of Lost, namely the names and reasons why the decided to pretend that three other people somehow survived the crash, only to die before they could get rescued, did find an answer in the rerun of the first part.
Along with the usual tidbits of information popping up on the screen all along, what ABC aired was actually a slightly different version of the episode, featuring an extended version of the famous Oceanic 6 Press Conference. A longer version during which, obviously, the question about who those three people came up, question to which Jack answered, and you can hear his response n the video below :
Okay, so I guess since this was Lost and aired on ABC we can consider this canon, so the three people who made it for a bit were Boone, who died from internal bleeding a few days after the crash, Libby, for whom all we know is that she didn’t make it through the first week, and our good old Charlie, who still drowned. So it’s all pretty accurate actually.
I’m pretty happy to finally find out who those people are, but I still don’t know why they lied about it, why come up with this ? Is there a deeper meaning to it, or was that simply to create a more dramatic and realistic effect to their lie ? And maybe some tribute to people they loved and who died for them, in a way.
Also, this makes the question that followed to Sun a little silly, since the three people had just been revealed, but I guess that journalist didn’t had a translator either.
