Emmy: Best Drama Actor/Actress Semi-Finalists

By fred | July 2, 2008

Breaking BadWell, today we have even more Emmy talk to do, as the semi-finalists for Best Drama Actor and Best Drama Actress are out. Well, it’s not really official but sources are trusted. Some good choices have been made, but there are a few names missing as well, sadly.

I’m happy to see Bryan Cranston, terrific on Breaking Bad, or Gabriel Byrne, amazing on In Treatment, on the list, and of course it’s great to see Hugh Laurie (House) there, even though the Academy never bothered giving the guy an award so far. At least it helps a bit swallowing the absence of Robert Sean Leonard as Supporting Drama Actor.

However, I’m really sad not to see Damian Lewis on that list, not just because I feel Life was the greatest new show last season, but because he was delivering one Hell of a performance, in a pure terrific British tradition, as initiated by Hugh Laurie. And, really, Patrick Dempsey ?? Okay he’s McDreamy and all, but really?? James Spader ?? Oh come one people… Matthew Fox on Lost way also way better!

Here’s the full list, in bold my votes for nominees.

BEST DRAMA ACTOR

Bryan Cranston, Breaking Bad (Pilot)
Denis Leary, Rescue Me (Babyface)
Eddie Izzard, The Riches (Last Temptation Of Wayne)
Gabriel Byrne, In Treatment (title to come)
Hugh Laurie, House (House’s Head)
James Spader, Boston Legal (The Court Supreme)
Jon Hamm, Mad Men (The Wheel)
Kyle Chandler, Friday Night Lights (Last Day Of Summer)
Michael C. Hall, Dexter (There’s Something About Harry)
Patrick Dempsey, Grey’s Anatomy (title to come)

As for my pick, it’d be a really tough call between Hugh Laurie once again fantastic, and Bryan Cranston also terrific! Really, I think we need a tie here, I’m not sure I can decide between those two…

On to actresses, and once again Lost fans will be disappointed, because despite her great run this season, Evangeline Lilly didn’t make it, somehow. Man am I really happy to see that at the very least they didn’t snub Michael Emerson… Hey, at least sci-fi addicts will be happy to see one name from Battlestar Galactica, right?

Names like Mariska Hargitay aren’t surprising I guess, others like Patricia Arquette I feel differently, but of course Glenn Close is here, and if I have a say in this she’ll be taking the Emmy home ! Go Damages!

Here’s the full list :

BEST DRAMA ACTRESS

Elisabeth Moss, Mad Men (The Hobo Code)
Glenn Close, Damages (Pilot)
Holly Hunter, Saving Grace (Tacos, Tulips, Duck and Spices)
Jeanne Tripplehorn, Big Love (Take Me As I Am)

Mariska Hargitay, Law & Order: Special Victims Unit (Undercover)
Mary McDonnell, Battlestar Galactica (Faith)
