Do you hate Katherine Heigl as well ?

By fred | December 3, 2007

I’m reading a few reports about how Katherine Heigl made “unflattering” comments towards her latest movie, Knocked Up, and the show that made her famous, Grey’s Anatomy. Some say she’s starting to bite the hands that feed her, others she she’s getting too full of herself, and many more are throwing of the hate she can come up with at her. How nice.

Katherine HeiglI’m not a fan of hers, and I realized that I used to hate her, because I couldn’t stand Izzie (and her dead fiancĂ©…), which was probably unfair. Yeah, probably. Anyways, I have nothing against her, or for her, but I just want to address this because I don’t see nothing wrong in what she’s saying.

In fact, I’d find it oh so refreshing to have someone to say what she (or he) actually thinks instead of the usual lying BS that everything’s perfect and he or she loves everyone. I’m sure you and I are the first to say it out loud when we hate a movie or thinks a show, or an episode, sucks; why shouldn’t they be able to do the same ? - But that’s not even what’s going on here, actually.

I’ll skip over the movie to go directly at the TV part of this. Reports have Heigl bashing the show when saying that the whole Gizzie thing was for “Ratings Ploy“, adding: “I’m trying to figure her out and keep her real.

Now sure, said like that she sounds way too full of herself. But that’s not really what she said, all she actually said was that she didn’t feel that whole plot actually fit her character :

That was kind of a big change for Izzie, wasn’t it, after she was so up on her moral high ground. They really hurt somebody, and they didn’t seem to be taking a lot of responsibility for it. I have a really hard time with that kind of thing. I’m maybe a little too black-and-white about it. I don’t really know Izzie very well right now. She’s changed a lot. I’m trying to figure her out and keep her real.

Now that sounds a little different already, doesn’t it ? And quite frankly while I wasn’t as “disgusted” by that relationship as many others - although it went to a pretty weird place where it felt that neither of them knew each others and had us wondered if they had actually been friends before - and while I was pretty relieved to see Izzie forgetting about that dead guy she couldn’t stop whining about previously, what she says is completely true.

I don’t see her bashing the show nor biting the hands that feed her, but only expressing her feelings on her character and the way she’s behaving lately. I don’t see nothing wrong with that. And about the ratings ploy ? Well, let’s be honest it probably was.

It was a ratings ploy. It was absolutely something that shocked people; it wasn’t predictable, and people didn’t see it coming. It’s our fourth season; there’s not a lot of spontaneity left. And business is business; I understand that, but I want there to be some cooperation between the business end and the creative end, so there’s some way of keeping it real.

And for those concern about her comments regarding Knocked Up, yes she said it was sexist. Precisely, she said a little more than just that : she felt it was “a little sexist. It paints the women as shrews, as humorless and uptight, and it paints the men as lovable, goofy, fun-loving guys. It exaggerated the characters, and I had a hard time with it, on some days. I’m playing such a bitch; why is she being such a killjoy ? Why is this how you’re portraying women ? Ninety-eight percent of the time it was an amazing experience, but it was hard for me to love the movie.
