Do Not Disturb producers apologize for creating a very bad show…

By fred | September 24, 2008

Do Not DisturbFox new sitcom, Do Not Disturb, hasn’t really been praised by anyone. Of course, there’s a very good reason for that, the first episode sucked, plain & simple.

But then the producers are doing something quite unusual, they are actually admitting it was bad television, and apologizing for it.

According to Variety, they send a letter to a handful of TV critics, admitting that their first episode wasn’t good. It sounds like a surprising thing, but here’s where things get actually even worse : they blame the whole mess on Fox, as they decided not to air the original pilot first, but another episode.

We here at Do Not Disturb agree that by airing the “Work Sex” episode — before airing the actual pilot — we created much confusion and we deserve all the criticism, the bad puns (i.e. “an early checkout from the fall season,’ ‘Do Not Make in the First Place,’ etc.) and, yes, even the accusation that it very well could be the final nail in the multicamera sitcom’s coffin.

Now, of course Fox’s decision to mess with the show like that is stupid and we all hate them for it, but there’s an even bigger problem with what the producers of Do Not Disturb are saying here, as they’re implying that only problem was that the episode wasn’t supposed to air first. That’s not what people have been saying, they’ve been saying it sucked, it wasn’t funny, at all, not one line, ever. I don’t see how it would have been any different if the episode aired as first, second, or last episode, either way it was bad, really really bad.

Because while apologizing “for being the perpetrators of such bad television” they also argued that their show wasn’t as bad as critics claimed, only that’s not the case. I actually watched the actual (still unaired) pilot as well (which is now planned to be the firth episode aired), and truth is it was even worse !

Besides, what were they trying to say here ? That the pilot was actually good (according to them), and only every other episode after that sucked ? How could that be possibly be any good ?

Now my question is : since we’re all agreeing on at least one thing, Do Not Disturb sucks, it is “bad television“, can we move on ? Apologies accepted, if we can now put it off the air (since it should have never been there in the first place anyway) — agreed?
