Dead people are dead, but come back
By fred | August 2, 2007
You know how sometimes on a TV show, someone you thought dead will come back? Depending on the show, it can totally happen, sometimes you even expect it. No one would find it odd on Sci-Fi shows and such.
When you see the father of the Winchesters’ boys in Supernatural come back, it makes sense. And everyone can knows being dead doesn’t stop you from being seen on Lost, one way or another.
But recently, pure drama like 24 or CSI: Miami have been going to this new “trend” of bringing back characters that were dead, really dead.
You know how 24’s producers like to say that unless you saw people actually dead on their show, they can come back. Well apparently now even when they die, they can come back. How retarded is that?? Really?
I mean every fan of the show will remember Tony trying to kill Henderson, responsible for his wife Michelle’s death, only to get the deadly shot and die in Jack’s arms, his last words being “She’s gone, Jack.” revealing his lack of reason to fight or leave anymore.
Did we assume he died, but he in fact did not, somehow? I’m pretty sure we did not, Tony did die that day. You can even read it on Fox’s 24 website :
7:59 P.M.
Jack enters the clinic and finds Tony and Burke on the ground. Gasping his last breath of life, Tony tells Jack that he couldn’t do it. Jack clutches Tony’s head. Tony dies, and Jack cries with him still in his arms.
Pretty damn clear : Tony dies. Not falls into a coma or whatever, no, he died. So when producers are now trying to get Tony back in the game, it’s just retarded. Planning his come back for the season finale of season 6 as they did, or trying to have him back during season 7 doesn’t matter : it’s plain stupid.
When talking about it, even executive producer David Fury said that “Tony’s death wasn’t satisfying“. Ok, so it wasn’t, they didn’t do what they wanted to do, it didn’t turned out the way they had hoped. Fine. This is still “Tony’s death” we’re talking about here, as in he’s dead, so it’s too late, what’s done is done.
24 is not like Lost or The 4400 for example, it’s a drama, no sci-fi elements that could have dead characters back on. Unless they were to have season 7 of the show occur actually before Day 5, this should not happen.
When you watch a drama, you know that certain character aren’t really at risk : no way they’ll kill Jack Bauer. But you want to believe they do, and that secondary characters actually do risk actual threats, deadly ones, and if they fail, they’re really gone, forever.
This why why drama isn’t crappy soap, it aims at being more realistic, not to have dead people back, or have the brother who’s in fact the mother of the cousin….
And sadly 24 isn’t alone. CSI: Miami will also bring one of their old character back from the dead with no plausible explanation whatsoever, cause there can’t be one.
Detective Tim Speedle was killed during a previous season, due to a malfunction of his gun. In reality, actor Rory Cochrane asked to be leave. Yet CBS has confirmed that Cochrane will come back to the show for his role, I mean really his role, not as some evil twin brother, hidden son, and not even to only appear during flashbacks.
So what, the aliens brought him back to life, a miracle occured, his death was faked to protect someone….?
