Cancellation roundup!
By fred | February 21, 2008
Now that the strike is over, lots of shows are (finally) getting canceled, more or less officially, on every network.
* I’ll start with one that actually really pleases me : CBS has canceled Cane. The show is done, and I’m happy about this because it could be good news for Lost ! I’m happy not because I thought the show wasn’t good, even though that’s true, but because I sure hope that now Nestor Carbonell can find its way back to Lost, because we need to find out more about the never-aging Richard Alpert !
* Still no official word yet from NBC, but according to different sources from Michael Ausiello the Peacock has finally decided to put crappy Bionic Woman to rest.
* NBC is also letting go Las Vegas, after five seasons. NBC had hoped this season’s cast shake-up - Thomas Magnum replacing Sonny Corleone - might re-energize the show, but instead it led to a double-digit ratings decline. Of course, the Friday time slot didn’t help. So yes, last Friday’s episode was not just a season finale, but a series finale as well !
* It may not be official yet, but it seems that ABC decided to cancel Woman’s Murder Club.
* Another one with no official word from the network, but it’s a done deal anyway : you won’t see K-Ville anymore on Fox (or anywhere else). You can be sure of it, given how main star Anthony Anderson has already signed for his next deal : he will replace Jesse L. Martin, leaving Law & Order after 9 years as Ed Green. Anderson is expected to join the show during the end of this 18th season.
* Rumors are out that the Alphabet won’t renew Cashmere Mafia, so last night’s episode was likely a series finaly as well.
* Another one from NBC, canceling lots of shows it seems, and one that I’m sure will get people to react : Friday Night Lights. Calm down, the show hasn’t been officially canceled, but NBC doesn’t want to keep it on. Instead, they’re talking to different networks about the idea of “sharing” the show. Much like they did for Law & Order: Criminal Intent for example, which aired on USA before finding its way back on NBC (though it only did so because of the strike…)
Of course, both USA and NBC are owned by the same group, so things were probably easier to work out. Yet, NBC is talking to The CW, TNT, DirecTV or E! And rumor is that Comcast CEO Ted Harbert - owner of E! - is a fan of the show, and is said to be really trying to find a way to save the show from cancellation…
