Breaking: Scrubs might get a finale SEASON, on ABC !!
By fred | February 29, 2008
As you all know, this season was supposed to be the very last one for beloved Scrubs. One last season and a series finale were planned, but then came the writers’ strike. Not all episodes could be completed, it became a mess, and then NBC wasn’t so inclined to get them to have a real series finale, despite the obvious love for the show so many fans have.
But that’s NBC, and they can be such morons. And while creator Bill Lawrence was hoping to get about 4 or 5 more episodes ordered to be able to end the series as originally dreamed, it seemed that the Peacock wasn’t really felling it that way. I told you, morons.
And this is when the Alphabet comes in to save us all !!
Scrubs airs on NBC, but is actually produced by ABC Studios (formerly Touchstone). More than that, ABC President Steve McPherson never hide the fact the he loved the show, and considered it a “personal favorite”. In fact, McPherson helped develop the show while he was at Touchstone, and it’s not the first time that he has been courting the show.
And while NBC was apparently only willing to give Lawrence one final episode, or a straight-to-DVD finale, ABC is putting a lot more on the table : they’re willing to pick up the show for a complete final season, made of no less than 18 episodes !!
According to different sources “wheels are in motion”, and if a deal is done the network would pick up the show for next season, “The episodes will be shot right away and will be ready to air in the fall.”
Just last week at the Independent Spirit Awards, Zach Braff talked about the future fate of his show, declaring that “the network is figuring out how many they want. The studio is figuring out how much they want so… this is the last season. It’s over but we’re not exactly sure how many more they’re doing.”
Turns out it may be be over that soon, and while some contracts were ending this season, word is that the entire cast (including Zach Braff) is on board for another 18 episode run !
So in the end it means that NBC would get to air the 5 completed episodes they already have waiting as planned, maybe even trying to promote the last one of them as series finale, those morons, but the truth is that these episodes have not meant to be a series or even season finale, and the show would actually come back on ABC this fall for a final season of 18 episodes !
Screw you NBC!
PS: And since the show is ABC’s President personal favorite, and they seem to have no problem renewing shows endlessly (see According To Jim), who knows if this would really be the last season… hey, one can dream, right?
