Because Scripted TV Needs More Reality In It…

By fred | June 26, 2008

Paris Hilton - My Name Is EarlOh God, please make it stop.

It seems there’s a new trend lately, that makes for scripted shows, usually comedies, to feel the need to hire some “tabloid cover girl” and turn them into their special guest-star, like this was going to be such a cool move and a great boost in ratings. You know what, I was never for it anyways, but I’m getting really sick of it now !

I mean sure, Britney Spears did boost the ratings a bit for How I Met Your Mother, she was also really bad and I’m guessing about 99.9% of the people who tuned in for this episode while not usually watching the show, only did so to see how much of a train wreck she was, so they could make more fun of her. Also, I guess at least 99.9% of them will NOT be coming back to the show, because they only cared about making fun of a train wreck.

So in the end what this was, was nothing more than a stupid promo-stunt that didn’t really do wonders, or anything, for the show, a show that once had a soul. I love How I Met Your Mother and I (used to) have all the faith in the world in their creative team, but getting Britney Spears on was a mistake. Bringing her a second time, was a disgusting “mistake” (and made for even more of a crappy episode), and the fact that they keep saying they’re open to have her on for a third time makes me want to hit them in the face, really, because they need to wake up and see that (a) she can’t act, and (b) the show is much better than that and doesn’t deserve to be treated that way, neither do its fans !!

But it doesn’t stop here, we’ve also had to see Paris Hilton make an appearance in My Name Is Earl or Lindsay Lohan in Ugly Betty (although I guess Lohan is supposedly an actress…), or now NBC - of course! - intends to do it more more time, bringing in Nicole Ritchie this time. And really, I’m getting more than sick of all those so-called guest appearances that are nothing but trying to get a show talked about, maybe a boost in the ratings, I really wish it would stop already.

I’m not even a fan of the show, in fact on many occasions I’ve stated how I didn’t like it, but still when NBC proudly announced in a press release that Nicole Ritchie would appear on Chuck next season… *sigh*

Of course, executive producer Josh Schwartz is enthusiastic about this whole thing, “Nicole auditioned for the part and was very funny. This role is a great opportunity for her to show off her comedic skills and be diabolically evil and kick some butt. It’s going to be really fun.” Yeah, just like Britney had a great time and was so funny and really showed talent, if you believe the people from HIMYM. Of course, if you’ve seen the actual episodes you know better…

I’m not saying she will be a mess too, but has she ever acted in anything before landing a spot on a prime time series in one of the four main TV networks ? And no, I don’t mean any of that The Simple Life crap, I’m talking about acting.

Anyways, [SPOILERS AHEAD], it’s too late now and she will be a guest on Chuck, where she is said to play a character from Special Agent Sarah Walker past. See, Ritchie’s character used to be mean to Walker, she was her “snarky and spiteful” high school nemesis. Does it sounds a bit like Lindsay Lohan’s part of Ugly Betty ? Does that mean will get to see Yvonne Strahovski in a fat suit or something ? Wow, I can’t wait… not!
