(At Least) Three More Years Of The Office

By fred | June 19, 2008

The OfficeAs you probably know, our great Michael Scott Steve Carell is in full promo-mode these days, showing the world he can Get Smart. And during one of the many interviews he’s doing each day, here’s a little tidbit of information we, fans of The Office, might found particularly interesting.

Talking about the future of his hit-sitcom, Steve Carell said : “All of the main cast are signed for three more. Beyond that, I have no idea.

So we should have at least three more years of The Office, yay! Although, to tell you the truth, this got me thinking : I know what happened to Lost did happen because the show is such a heavily serialized show and it was pretty much required to ensure it wouldn’t burn and crash miserably, as it would have otherwise, but what ABC did there was actually a blessing a lot more shows could use.

One of the reason we have great memories - or not-so-great ones - of past shows comes from their ending, how and when it ended. Question: Should those three more years be the last ones for The Office ??

It’s not that I don’t like the show, quite the contrary in fact : it is that I love the show, and I want it to be great, and to remain great all the way ’til the end. One of the requirement for that, is that is should end “soon enough”. There’s a reason Seinfeld is still the greatest sitcom to this day : they knew when to end things, while still on top of their game.

Trying to go for one more year than you should have is a guaranteed way to ruin a show. See Ally McBeal, see That 70’s Show, see Prison Break! All those shows were once great, but ran for too long.

The Office has already ended its fourth years on the air, and adding to that three more years would bring us to season 7. I want to trust all the great minds working on the show that they can pull it off and deliver three more years of greatness and hilarity, but I also hope they can realize that after seven years, it might be time for the crew doing that documentary to leave the Scranton branch, don’t you think?

Meanwhile, about a more immediate future for the show, Steve Carell added : “I have no idea what’s going to happen in the next episode, but I can’t wait to find out. I think Amy Ryan will be coming back, which I’m looking forward to because I thought she was terrific.” Yes she was, and I would love to see her coming back as well.

What about you guys : Do you agree the show should end after the three coming years ? Do you want Amy Ryan back, maybe even as a series regular ? Do you want her to ever find out Kevin isn’t actually “slow” ?
