A Second Season For In Treatment ?
By fred | June 3, 2008
Last season, HBO introduced a new series, In Treatment, that was very demanding on its audience. Not only because of what it was, which is basically nothing but two people sitting and talking about one’s problems, but also because it was one half-hour episode per day, five days a week. And while ratings have never been extraordinary, the show had a pretty good first season which didn’t do too bad either and had a nice buzz surrounding it.
While I personally didn’t enjoy all the patients’ stories, some where really good, and pretty much each of them had one thing in common : some pretty great acting performances; Starting with Gabriel Byrne of course, or Mia Wasikowska who was nothing but brilliant.
The show will likely never been a “hit”, given its concept, but it probably doesn’t cost too much except for the actors salaries. The show was also done “tapeless”, using recent digital alternatives. This wasn’t an obvious choice for co-producer Jim Hilton at first, but once he got to think about it the choice seemed a perfect match : “First and foremost, we saved time. And we saved thousands of dollars in the videotape masters we didn’t have to duplicate.”
So after a solid first season and a critically well-received first season, the show could come back. Once the season was over, it was clear a few patients wouldn’t come back, and while others could, while the main story about Paul’s life could have a follow-up, things could have also ended right there. If there still hasn’t been any official announcement whether the show was either canceled or renewed, here’s a clue of where the future of the show could be played.
Law & Order: Criminal Intent executive producer Warren Leight is said to be close to sign an overall deal with HBO, and should such a deal be signed, the network is said to be interested in having Leight getting involved in In Treatment, which - I imagine - would therefore pretty much guarantee the show a second season.
Did you watch the first season of In Treatment ? And if so, would you be willing to invest in problems of new patients for a second season ?

Shows: In Treatment

I loved In Treatment. Watching it is a bit of a busman’s holiday for me as I am a psychotherapist. But I loved it enough to blog after each episode. If it gets a second season, and I fervently hope it does, I will be right there, watching and blogging it again.
