2008 Golden Globes Nominations: Wrong!
By fred | December 11, 2008
I usually love to trash the Emmys because whether you look at the winners of even the nominations, you just wonder if those people even watch TV. And it used to be that at least the Golden Globes got things a little better, right? Because then clearly this has changed, they got it all wrong, it’s almost insulting actually.
Unlike the Emmys, The Globes cover the calendar year, not the TV season, meaning that it includes the beginning of the year when there was not much TV going on, writers’ strike and all. But there was at least one thing on the air, and that thing was simply the best show of one of the greatest TV show, I of course am talking about Lost.
This season had been nothing less than fantastic, and The Constant is recognized by about everyone as being not only the best episode of the season/show so far, but the greatest hour of television of the year, at least. This was in fact even acknowledged by TIME voting it best episode of 2008.
And yet, not one single nomination for Lost. Not one. !?!!??
Seriously, what’s wrong with the Hollywood Foreign Press Association ? How the heck could they gave True Blood a nom for Best Drama, but nothing for Lost ?? And what about this little show that recently ended its run, The Shield ? Was that not good either ?
Couple of quick remarks : cable is still doing more than fine, with 22 noms for HBO, 8 for Showtime, but only 6 for the first broadcast network, which funnily enough is actually NBC ! Nothing to do with it I’m sure, but NBC will broadcast the Golden Globes ceremony on January 11.
(In bold my votes.)
Best Television Drama
Dexter
House
In Treatment
Mad Men
True Blood
Again, where the Hell is Lost ? Not to mention those usually snubbed like The Shield, The Wire, or Supernatural. Yes, this one is freaking awesome as well. Actually, if you’re talking quality TV here, I’d also vote for Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles long before True Blood, Dexter or even In Treatment (not that it was bad)…
Of that list, I’d go with House, but Mad Men will probably win (again).
Best Actor – Television Drama
Gabriel Byrne, In Treatment
Michael C. Hall, Dexter
Jon Hamm, Mad Men
Hugh Laurie, House
Jonathan Rhys Meyers, The Tudors
Only one representative of the big net, and Hugh Laurie should win it. He more than deserves it. I can see Hamm winning though, but I vote Laurie.
Best Actress – Television Drama
Sally Field, Brothers & Sisters
Mariska Hargitay, Law and Order: Special Victims Unit
January Jones, Mad Men
Anna Paquin, True Blood
Kyra Sedgwick, The Closer
Best Television Musical/Comedy
30 Rock
Californication
Entourage
The Office
Weeds
What a bunch of crap! I’m sorry, but where are the Pushing Daisies and How I Met Your Mother ?? No, instead we got Entourage - which isn’t as good as it used to – or Weeds - which pretty much sucks now, and always fails to be funny! Yeah right, at least I can vote for The Office, I mean Dinner Party alone makes them win, despite my love for 30 Rock.
Best Actor – Television Musical/Comedy
Alec Baldwin, 30 Rock
Steve Carell, The Office
Kevin Connolly, Entourage
David Duchovny, Californication
Tony Shalhoub, Monk
Okay, so this one is between Alec Baldwin and Steve Carell, and it’s a really tough call. But I think I have to go with Steve Carell this time…
Best Actress – Television Musical/Comedy
Christina Applegate, Samantha Who?
America Ferrera, Ugly Betty
Tina Fey, 30 Rock
Debra Messing, The Starter Wife
Mary-Louise Parker, Weeds
This one’s a no-brainer: Tina Fey !
Best Mini-Series Or Movie – Television
A Raisin In The Sun
Bernard and Doris
Cranford
John Adams
Recount
Best Actor in a Mini-Series or Movie – Television
Ralph Fiennes, Bernard and Doris
Paul Giamatti, John Adams
Kevin Spacey, Recount
Kiefer Sutherland, 24: Redemption
Tom Wilkinson, Recount
Should I be laughing?? Seriously, why is there Kiefer Sutherland’s name in there ? Okay, we all love Jack Bauer and we missed him very much, but really…
Best Actress in a Mini-Series or Motion Picture – Television
Judi Dench, Cranford
Catherine Keener, An American Crime
Laura Linney, John Adams
Shirley MacLaine, Coco Chanel
Susan Sarandon, Bernard and Doris
Best Supporting Actor – Television
Neil Patrick Harris, How I Met Your Mother
Denis Leary, Recount
Jeremy Piven, Entourage
Blair Underwood, In Treatment
Tom Wilkinson, John Adams
Because he is legen… wait for it… dary!
Best Supporting Actress – Television
Eileen Atkins, Cranford
Laura Dern, Recount
Melissa George, In Treatment
Rachel Griffiths, Brothers & Sisters
Dianne Wiest, In Treatment
