Tonight On TV: Damages season premiere. Also Knight Rider, The People’s Choice Awards, Law & Order

* What this means is that at 8.00 on ABC are reruns of the two episodes of Scrubs that aired last night, and no new Pushing Daisies. Listen, I love Scrubs and I’m all for promoting the Hell out of it, but ABC better not screw us up and find a slot to air those remaining episodes!

* Okay, so at 8.00 NBC has a new Knight Rider

* At 9.00 on CBS there’s the People’s Choice Awards, where bad TV gets celebrated with nominations including Knight Rider for best new series, or Britney Spears for scene stealer… yeah, and let’s rejoice that NBC is screwing TV and giving up on the 10pm slot, too.

* Then at 10.00 NBC has a new episode of Law & Order

* And finally some good television finds its way, as the season premiere of Damages kicks off the awaited sophomore season on FX !

Tuesday’s Numbers [01.06.2008]

Last night saw CBS winning the night thanks to its two hits that are NCIS and The Mentalist, and yet they didn’t won the demo, that went to NBC thanks to The Biggest Loser.

At 8.00 NCIS won the slot with 19.06 million viewers (-800 000) and 3.8 on the demo, while The Biggest Loser on NBC had over 8 million less viewers and still performed better on the demo with a 4.0 Meanwhile on The CW, 90210 was back with 2.41 million viewers (-500 000) and 1.4 on the demo.

An hour later The Mentalist proved once more it really is this season biggest hit (so far?) with a new series high and 19.56 million viewers (+200 000) watching, and a 3.9 on the demo — which was actually down, last episode scoring a 4.2

Monday’s Numbers [01.05.2008]

Quick update on the Monday ratings, dominated by Fox who won both in total viewers and on the demo thanks to Fiesta Bowl, averaging 15.80 million viewers and 5.5 on the demo over night.

Not a lot was new, but The CW and a new episode of Gossip Girl, slightly down (-100 000) and below 3 million with with 2.95 million viewers and 1.4 on the demo, while lead-out One Tree Hill was also down (-400 000) with 2.64 million viewers and 1.2 on the demo.

Privileged: All About What Lies Beneath

(S01E13) I think something that I hadn’t expected at all might be happening with me and this show, because if I always liked it and that grew week after week as it kept getting better each time, it also seemed obvious that this show was all about Megan. After all, she’s the reason this show exists, she’s the one it’s all about, the central character that links all other characters and stories one way or another.

Plus, Joanna Garcia is the driving force of the show, making it hard for anyone not to fall in love with it. But as things were progressing I found myself to like the girls more and more, and if for Rose it was as obvious as it can be - the girl has always been adorable since day one - even Sage managed to win me over, and she stopped trying to be a mean bitch (which she couldn’t really pull) and showed a different side of hers.

Scrubs: My Last Words

(S08E02) Okay, so forget anything you might have read or thought about Scrubs and its new season after the first episode, because then came this one. While the first episode was a perfect season opener, with the full cast included and all the laughs you could expect from it, this second episode felt probably more like what we will be getting this season - read not the whole cast was featured, as a way to reduce costs - and still was a perfect example of what fans have known ever since : this isn’t a show like any other.

Because there is not a lot of shows out there that can deal with a dying man, his fear of death and his last words and thoughts in the so brilliant and touching way Scrubs managed to do it here. But, the real wonder of the show might just be that this ain’t a drama, and while it obviously can do drama better than series whose job it is, Scrubs is a comedy, and yes, this episode was funny, more than that even.

Scrubs: My Jerks [season premiere]

(S08E01) “The more things changed the more they stay the same…” That would be the leitmotiv of this new - and probably final - season of Scrubs. This is likely to be the end of the series, as both star Zach Braff and creator Bill Lawrence have said this would be their last year, and I don’t think the show could survive such loss. Especially if (many) others leave as well, and recent news already have Neil Flynn (the janitor) casted in pilot for ABC’s new comedy The Middle…

But if this will be their last year, everyone at Sacred Hearts is more than determined to make the best of it, as Lawrence said they would tune down the goofiness and return to more “believable” characters, more real and less cartoonish, like in the first years of the show. Plus, after years of crappy treatment from NBC the show is now on ABC, and JD pointed to the new logo exclaiming how new it was, and in a shinny new HDTV format to make it even better!

Oh, and the show is stronger than ever.

The Mentalist: Red John’s Friend

(S01E11) Patrick Jane was back and this year he brought with him a little bit of his past, this mysterious past we don’t know all that much about, except that it is the driving force that makes him put up his smile every morning and gets him through the day. Now, I have to admit something, I myself am not that much into the whole Red John story.

Well, that’s not exactly true — I don’t mean I’m not into in or that I don’t like it, but only that I don’t really care if we don’t get to learn more about it “soon” and if it doesn’t get resolve until the series finale in many (many) years. It’s not that I don’t like serialization or anything like that, I actually do, but I don’t see this as a requirement for anything, not to be fun, good, interesting or compelling, not even to get me excited week in week out about a show.

Gossip Girl: In The Realm Of The Basses

(S02E14) Well well… some times a new year is time for (good) resolutions and welcome changes, and others things remain the same. As far as Gossip Girl is concerned, it was very much the later, there’s absolutely no question there. Before anything else, what this means is that for the first episode of the year we got an episode that was about as good as any of got last year.

We were left with the disappearances of Chuck, running away after Blair finally took it upon herself to let out those three famous words, and if you’ve seen the episode you know that all you could expect from those two was delivered (and more) in this great installment of the show.

It seems that writers would like to think of Serena & Dan as “the” couple of the show, but there’s no doubt the real stars are Blair and Chuck, and a special mention to both Leighton Meester and Ed Westwick for their great performances.

Tuesday’s Numbers [12.30.2008]

Not a whole lot to talk about when it comes to last night, except to say that CBS won the night thanks a rerun of NCIS - most-watched program of the night - and the Kennedy Center Honors Special which did rather well, though performed poorly on the demo. And it was NBC who won on the demo, with a rerun of Law & Order: SVU doing as good as the one of NCIS two hours earlier, only with 3.8 million viewers less.

As for actually new things, ABC had both a new According To Jim at 9.30 which merely got 3.77 million viewers and 1.2 on the demo, a clear season low, followed at 10.00 by a new episode of Eli Stone, which didn’t do much better - even though, well, it actually did do better - with only 3.81 million viewers (and lost 300 000 viewers from its first to second half-hour) and 1.2 on the demo. That was a season low for Eli Stone, which had never got below 4 million viewers before.

To Love & Die: Pilot

(Movie) Okay, so after looking into it some more, here’s what I found : this was originally intended to be a (2-hour) pilot episode when it was produced, and we’re talking about two years ago, back in 2006 (!). The 2-hour pilot was shot and USA must have liked it, as they ordered 12 episodes of the series in mid-2007. But apparently something went wrong on the way, as it went nowhere, no more episodes have been produced (as far as I know) and the whole thing just died.

But, instead of forgetting about it USA decided to burn it off last night, airing what they now refer to as a movie, since they won’t be any more of it — which is quite a certainty I’d say, given how it’s been over a year and everyone moved on, starting with Shiri Appleby - now on E.R. - or Tim Matheson. But you might still have watched this as a one-time thing, a movie indeed, and that wouldn’t have been a bad thing at all!

Eli Stone: Two Ministers

(S02E09) Well, this was obviously the last episode of 2008 for Eli Stone, and it might also be the last one in a while/altogether, since while more episodes have been produced, ABC has yet to announce any dates for the remaining episodes. Hopefully they will air those episodes, but for now we don’t know when, or even if, they will do so. I sure hope they will, though.

As for this episode, it’s definitely not the one you want to end the show with. A few reasons fore that, the main one being that this can’t be how Eli is last remembered by its fans, we cannot have as memory of the last time we saw him what we got to see during this episode. Because of what happened and the way things “ended” of course, but also because I don’t think this was a very good episode!

Series Premiere of To Love & Die on December 30

A while back I mentioned new series in the work for USA, one of them being To Love & Die, starring Shiri Appleby.

The cable network had given a 12-episode order for the series, revolving around a fun-loving 30-something woman, Hildy (Shiri Appleby), with abandonment issues convinced that her dating problems would be resolved if only she were able to track down the father (Tim Matheson) she never knew. When she finally does, she finds out not only that the guy is actually a contract killer, but that she has a real knack for this unexpected line of work.

USA announced that the dramedy will come very soon, making its debut in form of a made-for-TV movie. I’m not exactly sure if this is a telefilm to launch the actual series later in 2009, or considered to be a two-hour pilot episode. Either way, it begins on Tuesday, December 30th at 8.00 - on USA of course.

The film stars Shiri Appleby, Tim Matheson, Frances Fisher and Ivan Sergei.

Monday’s Numbers [12.22.2008]

Except for a new Prison Break on Fox (and Momma’s Boys on NBC), last night was all about reruns, and they did pretty well — especially those on CBS, winner of the night.

At 8.00 is was all reruns, we’ll just note that the CBS comedies are still strong in reruns, winning the slot and beating a rerun of House on Fox both in viewers as well as on the demo. On a little less fun note, that rerun of House actually managed to pull 6.13 million viewers and 2.1 on the demo, better than what Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles has been doing with new episodes (and solid competition).

Prison Break: The Sunshine State

(S04E16) Well, this time this is it, the last episode of the year for Prison Break, with no return date set as of yet. The six remaining episodes are expected to come back later, maybe April or March, to conclude this season, and probably even the series as a whole. But for now the focus isn’t there, it’s on Scylla of course, as it’s always been this season.

Only these days, our brand new and remodeled team isn’t looking as good as the original one, and their goal isn’t really the same : it’s not about stealing Scylla from the Company to bring it down, but getting it back so Scylla can be returned to its original owner, the Company’s General. Makes sense? Not really, but who the Hell cares!

That’s how it goes, every 365 days or so when the year comes to an end, right before Christmas, you turn to your loved ones to tell them how they’ve disappointed you again, as goes the good old tradition of the alternate holiday introduced to us by no other than George’s dad, Frank Costanza.

Now make sure your aluminum pole is ready, and let’s have a look at all the things that disappointed us this year in TV land. And as it turns out, disappointments have been legion!
