Where the hell is South Park ??

By fred | October 2, 2007

South ParkSeriously dude, what happened to cartoons this week ? I just watched both The Simpsons and Family Guy and the only thing I can think of now is, where are the funny cartoons, where is a cartoon not afraid to be daring and edgy, and most important, where is the cartoon that don’t forget to be hilarious.

In other words, where’s my beloved South Park ? Because let’s be honest, none of this week’s previously mentioned cartoons were funny.

Family Guy

(S06E02) So… yeah. What was that ? After their great Star Wars season premiere last week, I was expecting the show to return to its basis : somewhat of a story, only used as a reason to pop up many jokes & pop references here and there, cause they’re hilarious, or funny.

But instead they tried a different approach, they went for a full story to develop throughout the episode. But why? They were never really good at that, and this time wasn’t different. Not so good, and definitely not (quite) funny.

Let’s put it simple : I did not laugh, and I even thought Brian’s behavior regarding his girlfriend wasn’t making much sense. But maybe I was just so bored that I started looking for too much…

The Simpsons

Funnily enough, both shows seemed to suffer from the same decease. The Simpsons never had the same construction as Family Guy, but they do not usually have one single story for the whole episode either, it evolve rapidly, jumping from one plot to another over the course of the episode.

Not this time, this time is was all about Homer being an famous Opera star. And honestly, it wasn’t that funny. Sure, a few jokes worked pretty good, like the church sign, reading “Jesus: The Real American Idol”, or the scene in the end with all the snipers, but overall it was simply not that funny.

I would say, you could sense it from the start, and that awfully long couch-gag. This was one hell of a couch gag, long, pretty long, and maybe even too long. But the worse was that it was obviously a filler. Had they relied on their traditional “formula”, with different stories within the episode, this would have most likely not be needed, and the final result would have end up being much funnier.

I’m ready to bet the same is true for Family Guy.

South Park

So after watching such cartoons, I can’t help but miss the one that is usually just hilarious, from the start till the end, from the story to each single jokes, it’s definitely the best one around, and season 11 is coming back this Wednesday, at 10.00pm on Comedy Central. Be sure not to miss it, I’m ready to bet it will be much better than both this week’s episode of Family Guy and The Simpsons combined, probably both of last week’s episode combined even!
