When Psych is good, it’s really good!

By fred | July 23, 2007

Psych(S02E02) Alright, I have to admit, sometimes a somewhat bad show gets good. Sometimes, a show already good show gets better. I’m not sure which case is best, but there’s one thing for sure : either way nothing feels better to watch a show improve.

And Psych did that, big time. I’ve said it before, I started watching the first season but stopped back then cause the show wasn’t really good. And quite annoying. But as proven by this season premiere, and now confirmed with this new episode, the show got much better : it is now a good show, a pretty damn good one in fact.

After watching the season premiere last week I was already quite impressed, although there was still annoyances that bugged me. Specifically, I was hoping for more “stronger” cases, since last week’s one was only pretext for jokes.

Well, this time we got served with a pretty interesting case, one where we actually got to see Shawn & Gus having to look for clues, conduct interviews and investigate in order to resolve it. It was no more only a set up for jokes, but don’t read that wrong : jokes were still around. A lot. And good ones.

From the moment Shawn revealed his murder suspect, no other than a dinosaur, to the very end of the episode there was nothing but good things. There was less pop culture references and obvious jokes made for the sake of comedy only, no this time it was a great combo of mystery solving and comedy brilliantly mixed together into a great, fun, enjoyable hour of entertainment.

One of my previous critics was that Shawn was quite obnoxious. Maybe it’s me, but it wasn’t that bad this time, and even what I called his “hey viewer you’re a moron!” noticing moments were not that bad either.

PsychSure it works still the same, they probably have to: with the eyes, zooms, background music and visual effects. But it wasn’t as annoying as last time, it felt much more blended into the flow of the episode. And, another thing I couldn’t stand when I started watching, was - mostly at the the end - when Shawn had to explain something he had a “vision” of, and resolve the case.

We as viewers usually already knew it all by then, but he had to go through it all again, for the cops mostly. Obviously he wouldn’t just explain things, he had to make this whole annoying as hell “show” of his to prove he was, indeed, a psych. Now they don’t do this anymore, it’s done way simpler by him simply telling what he “saw”, and explaining what happened.

This is such a relief! Added to better/less annoying “noticing” moments and you have a very better show.
