Weeds: The Three Coolers

By fred | July 8, 2008

Weeds(S04E04) Alright, so after last week’s episode of Weeds, the overall impression for this new season wasn’t all that good. It was a completely different location for Nancy and her family, but other than that we all failed to see anything new. Not only that, but the show was nowhere near as good as it once used to be. As a matter of fact, let’s be honest : up until now episodes had been quite boring (at times).

This was probably due to already many misdirections, such as dealing with a dying grandma and how to get ride of her, her son, and that whole plotline. Which also resulted in the show being quite heavy on the drama. Sure, Weeds has probably always been in the dramedy category, a mix of both drama and comedy, but originally - and when it was it his best - the show was/is a comedy.

Its heart and soul is in the funny department, and we all missed that, a lot, didn’t we?

But at least that whole dying plot had a really great exit, as the shiva scenes were the best and funniest of this season so far, in major part due to the oh-so welcome return of the one and only Doug !! I was waiting for him to walk that door, and as soon as he did he was hilarious, and he never stopped throughout the entire episode.

Sadly though, while the return of Doug comedy is welcome, the show still clearly lacks something, and that is a sense of knowing where it is going. Watching the show so far, it really feels like no one has any idea where they are going with their lives, not that it bothers them, and more importantly it seems like writers don’t really know where they’re heading with the show this season, which is clearly a problem.

This week we learned something, Lenny is an asshole, nothing more. So good riddance, hope to never see you again. In the end I’m not sure why they bring him on the show, because it didn’t really work for the best. Did he bring anything to the show ? Was it funny ? Was there a point, being the obvious “Nancy getting screwed once again” ?? I think not.

But Lenny found out about Nancy’s “activities” and left. That said, I’m not sure Nancy is actually a pot dealer. She used to deal weeds, at some point in her life, that’s for sure. But what does she do now ? I really don’t know. We don’t know what she’s really up to, in fact I don’t think she even knows what it is she does, yet for some reason she doesn’t care.

She doesn’t care about that, about his son smoking and growing pot, she doesn’t care about anything anymore these days. And she’s still not that bright, as illustrated by the whole Nancy/Andy making-out scene. She definitely didn’t need a completely loaded Andy by her side, and that whole making-out bit didn’t really made me smile either. I’m also still quite surprised that, as they acknowledged, Nancy actually killed someone, she did murder Bubbie, but it’s nothing more than an excuse for unfunny jokes.

Anyways, as always things work out magically for Nancy, because she might have been robbed out of her money, but she just found herself a place to live with her kids, so it’s not all bad. Also, she reunited with an old friend, Celia.

Now this was clearly the weakest part of this episode, because :

- If anyone can find Nancy that easily - I mean anyone looking for Nancy just showed up there, see Celia, or Doug… - I really wonder why the cops needed Celia in the first place ?

- It still doesn’t make any sense that she was let go free just like that, by what seems to be the will of only one guy, who has a crush on Celia and expresses it in what gives us very odd scenes. That whole scene in the bar, chit-chat and singing, was really bad if you ask me.

- I’m sure Nancy will keep Celia around, for some reason - I mean it’s not like she threatened her kids and Nancy put a knife to her throat or anything… - and that stupid cop will probably just die on his own, somehow. I just hope Andy will simply walk home, and that “Iowa” won’t turn into a new “Army camp” mess, if you see what I mean.

This episode was clearly not perfect, but the laughs were back and, at least for a first half, it really felt like the Weeds we used to know and love. Plus, thanks to Silas, dealing weeds is still part of the show. Overall, things are looking better.

You suck dick, Silas ?
