Weeds: No Man Is Pudding

(S04E05) This season was supposed to be brand new, the show was reinventing itself as Nancy and co were moving away from the little boxes into bigger troubles. And it took a while, and it wasn’t really all for the best, but slowly things are eventually starting to shape up it seems. Albert Brooks was brought in so give Nancy and her family a place to stay, I don’t really see what else he brought to the show, and we’ve seen her trying to find a new job.
But, if Nancy is always willing and asking to do the very risky thing, she wants to see the drugs and sneak it in and sell it, the fact and the matter is, she sucks at it. There’s no question there, and it was perfectly illustrated during her first test drive through the border. She couldn’t possibly have done worse, and just like for us, it didn’t take Guillermo very long to realize that fact - even though I’m sure Nancy still thinks she would do a great job.
So now it seems that finally we are starting to look at what this new life will be like, how things will go down from now on : everyone is back together, Nancy got herself a new boring job, which of course hides something else. Maybe this should all be exciting, but I fail to get there because this episode was simply not so good I felt.
I mean, of course Nancy found a way to get Celia to come along with her, and it’s no surprise that she started by blaming it all on Celia and complained she had a bad karma and that shit kept happening to her, that’s how selfish and self-centered she is. But the truth is, she’s the luckiest drug dealer the world has ever known. Because she’s really bad at it, yet she managed to get that far without getting anyone (she cared for) hurt.
She now has a high-profile job that comes with a fat paycheck, and things always worked out nice & easy for her. Just this week, and that whole mess with the cop ? She just walked to the bar, asked him to back off because he has “a kind heart”, and so he does, basically. That’s all it took, the guy didn’t even try to fight back - even though he was supposedly working on that case against Guillermo for years - and I’m sure we won’t ever hear from him again.
And the fact that she had to actually go there and talk, was unusual. Traditionally, someone else would have done it for her. But by the end of the episode, Nancy seemed to realize some of that, and how badly she’s been treating her family lately, especially her kids, and might be willing to change. I’m not sure we will see any actual change, but we’ll see.
Other than that, I’m sure relieved that the whole thing with Any going to town ended short, although it lasted a bit too long for my taste already, and while Doug is still awesome and hilarious, that whole B-plot with the bees ? Really ? I guess they needed to give something to do to Shane and Silas, but is that really all they could come up with ?
I’m just not sold on this new season yet, and I also think it’s nothing really new for Nancy. It happened before, didn’t it? She finds herself in a new situation, where there’s no more immediate threats or stress, she feels like she’s managed to get to a better place, she’s got things under control, money comes in, everything looks fine and then it blows up, people scream, bullets fly, there’s blood and fire involved, and she just moves to another place…
