Weeds: If You Work For A Living, Why Do You Kill Yourself Working? [season finale]
By fred | September 16, 2008
(S04E13) So we’re finally there, the end of the road for Weeds, and Nancy. Well, at least for the being being that is, of course the show isn’t over yet, but this new season is. This was the season of changes for Weeds, moving away from Agrestic, leaving Little Boxes behind and turning to new (but not better) things.
I wasn’t sure it would work, I had serious doubts, and now that we reached the end of the tunnel, I can say without a doubt that not only was the other side not worth the trouble of getting there, but the journey wasn’t even fun either. In other words, this season finale sucked, but so did the show this season, so it’s not like we expected anything else.
Now, first, to make things clear: I’m not blaming acting or directing here, because on that note things were well done, as is pretty much always the case in Weeds. But the writing sucks, this just isn’t Weeds anymore, and this simply isn’t any good.
What to say ? First, Andy “realized” than he’s in fact in love with Nancy, and now he sees her in a brand new light. Yeah, right, well, I’m not sure why they went there but I really wish they hadn’t.
I thought we wouldn’t see Celia this week, I thought that idea of sending her away was a way to get ride of her without questions, but it wasn’t. I wish it had been the case though, because sending her to find Quinn, only to reveal that the daughter went psycho on her own, and is now demanding $200 000 to send her back alive, otherwise it’ll be in little pieces, is pure crap.
Also, the very idea that anyone would pay anything, at all, to get Celia back, is a joke.
Then we had Doug, and his “fake suicide” that was actually a “rebirth”, in a sense. It might be pretty close to the character, but I didn’t find that any good or funny. And seeing what Doug did this season, I’d be fine with him leaving the show, because really at that point it’d be the same.
Okay, there was one thing that worked, that made me laugh really loud and felt like Weeds, like the good old Weeds we used to know & love a few years back:
“
- I gotta go.
- Wanna smoke first ?
- I can’t. Shit’s blowing up.
- How come you always have shit blowing up ? Where’s my shit !?? I used to have shit, it used to blow up all the time, now nothing, shit just sits there.
- That’s some tough shit.
- Shit!
”
Okay, that one I really liked, and that’s the only reason I don’t feel like I wasted an entire half-hour for shit, because at least this was some good shit. But other than that, it was shit. (Also, so very true: Doug used to be such a great character, with plenty of funny shit happening. Now, not so much.)
Shane is turning into a joke, he used to be such a great, smart kid, now he’s just a prick, thief, and drug dealer. What a shame… Meanwhile Silas ended things with his girl just like that, but at least he’s got a functioning brain, because he figured it out, the big mystery, what stupid Nancy couldn’t do : keep it simple. There’s a reason Nancy can’t rationalize what she’s doing no more, it used to be selling weeds, not dealing heroin, guns, people even.
Silas’ ideas is the best idea ever to come out of of this family in years : get a little farm somewhere, play it safe, grow some weed, have some fun, sell to locals, keep a low profile, enjoy your life. That’s a dream life, and that would actually be being smart and learning from Nancy’s mistake. So, sadly, don’t expect them to go anywhere with this idea.
Because Nancy is still a dumb fuck. Oh no, she didn’t had any plan to save her life, she didn’t even try to tell her boyfriend that the cop hit Guillermo and threatened her, tried to put everything back on her like she was behind everything, just trying to both look innocent and at the same time get the cop killed, because that looked like her only solution out of this mess, with both sides wanting her dead and all.
But no, she’s a retard, as always, so she just sit there and waited to get everything to work out magically for her. And so it did, the big twist that came out of nowhere to save her life, just like that, at the right time, being a baby. No, I didn’t see that coming, but that doesn’t mean it’s a good thing – and I don’t think it is. This twist didn’t made me want to know more and find out what happens next, it made me realize how much this show isn’t Weeds, not the Weeds I used to love, and that I might be better off.

What you missed was the beauty of Nancy’s new baby…THERE IS NO BABY!! It was all a ruse to save her butt. She saw the picture of the daughters and knew the only way to insure she was not killed (and buy her some time) was to give him a son. BRILLIANT!!
Oh no, its not that I did not miss that, but that I did not believe that, I still don’t. So far whatever happened to her, Nancy never had a plan, things just worked out for her nicely.
She went to the cops without thinking about it first, she met with him in public after the bust, I just can’t see her having actually thought of this, and came up with a plan and everything… At this point it makes more sense to me she just happened to be pregnant.
i totally agree with the writer of this review. this is not weeds. for the first time since i started watching the show…i actually turned the t.v off. and this is coming from someone who used to think weeds was the best t.v series out there (even topping The Office)…but now it’s crap. A BABY?? really?? honestly i thought the girl with the flower purse or whatever was Esteban’s daughter or 1 of them and that maybe chaos would occur from there…this and the whole season (minus a few laughable incidents…el coyote andy, shane’s picture moments and the short lived albert brooks…THIS SEASON SUCKED!! (i hope jenji reads this)
