The Sarah Silverman Program: Joan of Arf
By fred | October 11, 2007
(S02E02) Ahh, Sarah Silverman. What could possibly be said about her and her “Program” ? Well, for starter I said just last week, when the new season premiered, how glad I was to see her back, and true to her self and sense of humor. I had really enjoyed the episode, thanks to this.
Funnily enough, this episode was a little different than the usual. Now let’s be clear : it was still The Sarah Silverman Program, and it was the same sense of humor, and don’t get this wrong, it was still funny.
All of that goes without saying. So there, I said it.
But last week I told how she hadn’t changed from her self-absorbed, selfish, self-centered, childish, mean, sexy, innocent-looking girl. And just as a reaction to such words, this episode was a bit different. Oh sure, she still looked the same and cares about herself more than anything else. But she usually has many moments where it is outrageously obvious that she’s bringing attention to herself when she shouldn’t, that she’s only concerned about herself regardless of the reality of things.
Tonight, things very a bit different. For starter, she focused and worried not about her, but about her dog. And it was real, people. It wasn’t a selfish way to get something back for her, she actually care of the the damn thing. I mean dog.
While it may not be unusual to see her caring for others, as we all know she loves her sister, she still puts herself first and even as she’s destroying her sister’s life, relationship, or whatever, she’ll only see how this may or may not affect her. This time though, she wasn’t trying to get the dog back because she liked company or had plenty of dog food to use, she was actually concerned by another living creature. Not a human being, but it’s a start.
This didn’t change anything else about the show though, still freaking hilarious. How could you not love that phone call she made to her sister? Hilarious from the beginning, and how to reverse the situation, to the invitation she didn’t care about, to the ending where no one knew what to do and she hung up brilliantly. That was a classic phone call in its entirety, and a Sarah true to herself at that time indeed.
Just as she was when the animal protection guy came by, and how she slammed the door, “I don’t tip!“.
“
- Did you find my dog ?
- No, he’s right there.
- Oh yeah! Hey puppie!
”
The prison part was pretty funny as well, if only because half the dogs there - including Sarah’s - could easily walk through the bars.
On the other side, was the gay couple and friends fighting over gay marriage. From the “game of life” to the “window to her home” that was her door, this time it was a very funny story as well, and all of the episode was at the same level.
Before I go :
- “I’m here to inform you that I pose a danger to your pets.” Was that scene hilarious or what?!!
- The opening sequence was different, and shorter. Will it be a new one each episode now ?
- Slamming the door on Sarah’s sister and her boyfriend to make the “illegal lamp” !
- How could one not laugh when the lawyer, talking about bestiality, goes on : “What’s next ? Gay marriage!”
- “What’s he doing up?”
As always with television, there was an happy ending. So gay marriage is still illegal, and now that bestiality is legal in Valley Village, but only with animal of the opposite sex, I think we can sleep safe.
Another great episode, so while waiting for the next one, let’s all go find the next milk…
