The Office: Weight Loss [season premiere]

By fred | September 26, 2008

The Office(S05E01) There are many shows you’re excited about, many you can’t wait to get them back into your lives, but somehow things are always different when it comes to The Office, because it’s one of those rare shows that isn’t just a TV series. Well, at least for some people (or, you know, me…) it goes way beyond that, as you get really attached to all those characters.

It’s not so much the show we missed over the summer, but the people in it. And boy was it good to see the adorable Pam, Jim, Michael, Dwight, Angela, and all the others! Unfortunate events beyond our control had them and us separated over the last few months, but finally a sense of rightness has been restored in the world as The Office came back into our lives.

And it surely did not disappoint, that it did not do. It was once again an hour-long episode, but this was definitely one of the good ones. Unlike others where by the middle of it you could feel things changing, becoming often more ludicrous as well as sadly less funny, this episode was just amazing (and most certainly turned classic with events that took place).

And packed, too! So many things happened in one little hour, as for the first time the documentary crew stayed around the Scranton branch over the summer and presented us with a little summary of everything that went down during those eight weeks. Thing is, there were so much I’m not even sure I didn’t miss things while laughing, I’ll have to watch it again – many times. Let’s try to see what went down during the summer…

First, of course, a wedding is coming up ! It didn’t really happen in the best of situations, but she said yes, and now she has to deal with it. The poor guy tries as hard as possible, but every time he does Angela just can’t stand the idea of this marriage she doesn’t want in the first place, and she pages Dwight so they can have sex right no right there in the warehouse.

Sure, there are moments where she realizes that Andy really loves her and is willing to do anything for her, and she likes that, so much she doesn’t get depressed over the idea of the marriage and forgets about Dwight waiting downstairs. I’m not sure how this is going to end, but it can’t be good. So far though, Andy does about anything he’s asked to, even the craziest things, and he’s so high on love he can’t even see his future wife cheating on him is quite un-discrete ways.

Meanwhile Dwight was his true self, forcing people to eat always more before the competition starts, or just keep food in their mouth while on the scale is they can’t swallow; putting fruits into the vending machine only to later spray the flies now living in there; threatening Jim to write him & Pam for not working; getting a goatee right when Michael shaved his after Ryan did the same (by the way, everyone else noticed how Michael’s goatee came and went at some point?); or “kidnapping” Phyllis to try and force her to exercise.

Of course, if she didn’t see that coming it’s a little her fault I guess. There was that, how she took over Angela’s duties thanks to a little secret she knows, Stanley ending up happy to have lost weight on his own and taking his extra vacation days anyways, regardless of the competition and what “those imbeciles” did, Kelly in pure Kelly moments all along, so so many (great) things…

Ryan is back, and forced to take over Pam’s temporary replacement as receptionist. I ‘m not sure if I want him to stay around, but I think I like to have him around more than Jan so if we could choose… Anyways, that’s gotta be pretty humiliating for him, but don’t think this whole mess changed one bit, it did not, in fact he’s already making list of people to get back at (Kevin and Jim being there already) and, in pure douche-style, tried to get back with Kelly, using such great lines as “I was in my mid-20s” or my favorite, “I think I never really processed 9/11“. I’m still laughing at that one!
