The Office: Chairmodel

By fred | April 18, 2008

The Office(S04E10) Last week, The Office was back, and it was a pretty “special” episode as it didn’t took place in the actual office, as most episodes of the show do, but at Michael’s place, or Jan’s place, I’m not sure. Either way, it seems some people weren’t too happy about that, arguing that because of that, it wasn’t really an Office episode, and moreover stating that it somehow wasn’t as funny as the show usually is.

Obviously, to say that is proof you’re an idiot, because the show was fully back, and the episode nothing less than hilarious, so much than my stomach was in pain I was laughing so much. I’m not saying it wasn’t a very unique episode, I’m saying it was some classic The Office at his best. Either way, this week we are back to the office, so I’m sure everyone will be happier.

And really, how could you not be ? This episode was everything you could hope for from the show, it was great, hilarious, real, over the top, cute, and everyone was back on as their usual self. You had typical characters interactions, you had Stanley who couldn’t think of anyone he hated enough to set them up with Michael, you had Creed being Creed and eagerly waiting to get Pam’s chair (as she’ll get Michael’s once he get a new one), because then he will have two chairs, so only one to go. I have no idea why exactly, but coming from Creed it wan only be great, and probably weird. I love it!

You had Michael trying to get Phyllis to admit her friend was fat, or referring to Oscar’s homosexuality as his “condition”, and, sure, he stayed pretty quiet, but still you even had Toby doing one of those face only he can do. No really, it was a true, great, and hilarious episode of The Office.

And here’s why this show is so great : first, we had of course Michael being Michael. He’s now officially over Jan, they broke up. At least that’s what he said. So now he’s looking to date someone, of course, and of course this is going to become the office’s new priority and obligatory task, they have to write down a name for Michael or else they’ll get fired. And because Michael was looking in a catalog for a new chair, of course he found his soul mate, the only one who was made for him, she was a model on that catalog.

So Dwight being Dwight he will track her down, of course. Too bad she’s dead, Michael lost the love of his life, the one meant for him, the one he never met. Now, all of this is makes sense in the universe of the show, it’s some pure Michael Scott behavior right there. It might not be the kind of things that would happen in every office out there, but you don’t expect anything else from Michael, just like how he behaved when he met when the woman Pam set him up with. First, trying to lie about his identity to get away, another highly uncomfortable moment, and then ending this by saying how he liked talking to her, how it was very much “like talking to the sweet old lady on the bus“. And then, when she told him how rude that was, all he said was “now you ruined it“. Ah, Michael…

But at the same time, we had to deal with another problem on the office : some parking places are used by construction trucks, and as a result many people have to park far far away and do long walks to get to the office, and everyone hates it, some even more than others. This had to be stopped, and we witness a new great duo : Kevin and Andy.

And what was really good about this whole plot, is how real it was. This was exactly the kind of situations that actually happens, and how they’re dealt with. How people get mad over this and it becomes the number one priority, even Michael’s reaction was credible, that he didn’t care (he has his own parking spot) so he wouldn’t help. Of course, him being him, he just shut them down and right after reminds them to help him find a date. Ah, Michael…
