The Mentalist: Blood Brothers

(S01E22) We all know that this show is about Patrick Jane first, and that while he’s only a consultant for the CBI, it is him who will solve the mystery of the weekly crime they’re investigating and who will, in the end, come up with a little plan to fool the killer into either confessing or revealing himself. It’s the way it always go, and by now we don’t even care to pretend that Lisbon is the one in charge.
And it’s fine, really, her role is to act shocked and apologized for whenever Jane will do something he wasn’t supposed to do, but that because he’s not a cop and doesn’t really cares for the rules he did anyways, and have the team either help him concocting his plan or do the boring cop stuff that needs to be done, because at the end of the day they still actual actual, legally admissible evidences (although sometimes, you have to wonder…).
One thing I find odd though, is that after all this time we are more than used to it, and we love it. It’s a lot of fun to see Jane do his things and read as well as play people the way he does. When he tied up the woman to get ride of her, as well as breaking the authority figures, in order to get access to the kids and get them to talk, it was just a lot of fun.
It’s why we love to see Jane do his tricks, and Lisbon only and barely acted annoyed for appearances sake and nothing else. But then when they find out that a girl is missing, and Jane dismiss the idea of doing this boring work and decides to go out for a walk instead, I was a little surprised that no one seemed to know that what he meant, in his usual way of saying things, was that he knew this would lead nowhere, because he knew – as we all did – that the girl in question was abused and that the guy would try to get her out, and he knew how to get to her.
Jane was his usual self, and the only complaint that I would have would be that, once again, it had to end with him pulling out one little trick to get the killer to admit what he did. And as is often the case, the way he did was not worth anything, not legally, with the constraint of fear and whatnot. That kid was a real creep, forcing one of the girl to sleep with the man in charge only to then be able to blackmail him, and killing whoever tried to stop him, and arrogant as you would expect him to be. But that’s also why the lack of real conclusion to the case, besides Jane tricking him, gets frustrating. We don’t know what will happen in the end to him.
And while Jane was doing all his tricks, we also had lots to enjoy from the team, of course Rigsby running after a kid and ending up shirtless just in time for van Pelt to show up, but also some more inside about Cho, who apparently was in juvie for “the usual reasons,” whatever that means, and who probably real everyone’s file, including his own.
What’s so great about him, is the way he delivers his line, you never know if he’s kidding or not. I’m sure for a moment there Rigsby actually thought he was adopted, and I wouldn’t be surprised if Cho never read anyone’s files and was just busting balls here — although he’s the kind of guy who would have read the files. I also loved how when Grace asked what happened to Rigsby Cho quickly said ‘old age‘ or how, when someone complained that CBI didn’t mean much, he just went “yes we do need more brand recognition.”
In the end this was a perfectly enjoyable (if somewhat predictable) episode, and I think my only regret this season, ending soon, will be that every episode always ends the same: Jane figuring it out on his own while the team is way behind, and him tricking the killer(s) into revealing themselves somehow. I wish that every once in a while he wouldn’t use a trick to end things, and even more so that from time to time if he doesn’t need the team to figure it out, they do it on their own as soon if not sooner than he does.
What did everybody else think?
