The Big Bang Theory: The Classified Materials Turbulence

By fred | May 5, 2009

The Big Bang Theory(S02E22) While I’ve said many times that Sheldon is the funniest element of the show, and I love to see him & Penny interact together, they’re not the only characters of the show and, when given some good material, everybody else can actually be funny as well. Take Raj for instance, when he’s not that stupid geek who can’t say a word for some reason that has already been established is purely in his head, he can be funny.

He can be very funny even, as was the case this week. In fact, the best thing about this week’s episode, I would say, is probably the way all those secondary characters have been used and worked into the main story. For once this wasn’t about Sheldon or somehow found a way to make him the star, allowing for the likes of Raj or Howard to shine, and they can do so very well.

I won’t get into too much specific, I wouldn’t want to pre-blow you mind, cause otherwise you wouldn’t be able to put your socks back on and that’s not good. But let me say this, this episode was pretty damn funny, and that mainly for two reasons: Number 1, …and number two!

For a moment I wasn’t sure I would enjoy the characters not just making jokes but commenting on the value of said jokes, but in the end I found that it didn’t really matter, because it came (for the most part) from Sheldon, and he has a way with such things. “I thought the toilet humor would get less funny with repetition. Apparently there is no law of diminishing comedic returns with space poop.As he would say himself, it’s funny, because it’s true!

In fact, Sheldon usually isn’t one to laugh at any jokes except for the ones he will make himself, and that are likely not to get anybody else to laugh. But this time, after he took time to comment and explain why those were jokes and how they worked, he actually laughed. And the truth is, Sheldon laughing at the jokes was even funnier than the jokes themselves.

Of course the other plot of the episode was Penny and her date, and how in the end she’s still thinking of Leonard it seems. Now while I liked that Leonard giving bad advices cause he’s a bitter jealous man didn’t take the most clichéd path, I have to say I’m not sure if I like where this is going. It was the original premise, Leonard was into Penny and for a moment there they tried, but it didn’t work out.

Since those first days Penny has come a long way, and she sure is more open to the world of geeks even using Star Trek as reference herself in everyday conversation, but I’m not just sure that I care to see her & Leonard together… I guess we’ll see if it happens and how it will affect the dynamic between everybody there.

Now if you don’t want to end up as a banana slug, go get me my freaking latte!

What did everybody else think?
