Supernatural: Yellow Fever
By fred | October 24, 2008
(S04E06) Last week we had an episode that was absolutely awesome, of course, and also quite hilarious. It’s nothing new with Supernatural, humor has always been a (good) part of the show and we’ve had “special” episode with a clear take on comedy before. Of course, after a beginning of this new season as serious and dark as what it has been, this was a refreshing change.
But now that that was done, it was pretty normal to expect a return to the basis of the show and the usual tone for this season, I guess. And you were probably expecting an episode filled with things like fears, ghosts, blood, and why not even the return of no other than Lilith… weren’t you?
Well, lucky you : that’s exactly what happened. Sort of. While this episode was a little more “normal” than last week’s special, it seems the writers weren’t ready yet to send us back into the very heavy darkness of the season, an so while elements were there, of course, this episode was once again one of the funny ones. And I have to say, the comedy on this show has always been one of the best on TV.
So the boys were fighting a ghost demon this week, one that would insinuate fear into people, materialize fears, all kinds of fears, only to end with their biggest fear of all, the one that eventually their hearts couldn’t handle. But while both were “exposed” to this decease, only Dean was affected – because he’s a dick, or something.
The story of the monster of the week in itself was actually a pretty good one, with a terrible background story, great performances from everyone (I especially enjoyed the chat with the brother), and while burning the ashes is something we’ve seen them do for years now, it was actually a refreshing idea that they couldn’t possibly use this method this time, because of the way Luther was killed they couldn’t possibly get them all.
And while most of Dean’s fears were probably not really based on anything real (I don’t think Dean is really secretly afraid of teenagers), his biggest fear of all was. We know that Dean has always been worried about Sam, and – especially now that he knows Sam has been using his powers, and with the help of Ruby – he is worried, worried that he went too far, worried that he’ll start using again, scared not so much of what Sam is today, but what he might become tomorrow.
And of course, maybe not a cute little one with a pink ribbon as was actually chasing him, but “dogs” are associated with bad memories for Dean. Thank God Castiel managed to have him not really remember those four weeks he spent down there, because if that’s really 40 years of torture, that would be pretty hard not to be radically changed by such an experience.
While made as part of Dean’s hallucinations, the return of Lilith is part of the bigger story, obviously, and I have to say that the little girl going “ba-boom, ba-boom” at Dean as his heart was starting to fail was pretty intense. But of course, what really made this episode become an instant classic was the comedy, and while I couldn’t possibly remember everything that took place, here’s a few things :
* Last week it was AC/DC, this time it was Aerosmith. I think Dean mentioned five albums he was listening to over and over, right? Maybe they have a few more in store for us… next comedy break with Agents Page and Plant ?
* “Sam I’m not gonna make a left turn on an oncoming traffic, I’m not suicidal! *pause* Did I just say that? That was kinda weird.”
* Books are mean. “You’re dying… Again. Loser.”
Sam: It’s ghost sickness.
Dean: Ghost sickness ?
Sam: Yeah.
Dean: Oh God, no!
Sam: Yeah.
Dean: I don’t even know what that is.
* Dean, when handed a gun : “I’m not carrying that. It could go off! I’ll man the flashlight.”
* Now, I assume we all knew that there would be nothing scary on that locker, and we all knew he was gonna scream like a girl, right? I sure knew it, it was obvious, and also absolutely hilarious!! I had to pause I was laughing so much. “That was scary!” How is it possible this show, the writers or the actors never get any nomination for the Emmy ? Oh, right, it’s the Emmy…
* “This isn’t gonna work. I mean come on, these badges are fake! What if we get busted? We could go to jail! (…) Those are real. Obviously. Who would pretend to be an FBI agent, uh? That’s just nutty!”
* Being a hunter isn’t always easy…
Dean: What are we doing ?
Sam: We’re hunting a ghost.
Dean: A ghost! Exactly! Who does that?
Sam: Us.
Dean: Us, right! And that’s it, that is exactly why our lives suck. I mean come on, we hunt monsters! What the hell?! I mean, normal people, they see a monster and they run, but not us. No no no, we, we search out things that want to kill us! Or eat us! You know who does that? Crazy people! We, are insane!
* So what the Hell was that, at the end ?? I don’t get it. Are we supposed to pretend it wasn’t real, was it not real, and just Dean projecting or something ? I mean, he was cured, it was over, and he saw Saw with yellow eyes, didn’t he? Could it possibly have been real ??
If there’s one thing that this episode, well actually this season so far is proving, is that Supernatural is, without a doubt, one of the best shows on television right now.
So, what did you think of this episode ? Which was funnier, this one or last week ? Were you disappointed not to go back to the darkness of the season ? What was your favorite moment of the episode (bonus excluded) ?
Oh yeah, of course, the bonus “outtake” at the end was just awesome, so here you go, because it’s too good :

Shows: Supernatural

I liked last week episode very much, but this one made me laugh even more. I mean, come on, they can never do better than when they let Jensen rule the entire show! My favorite moment was also when he screams, I got tears I was laughing so hard. The scene with the snake is a close second.
I just LOVE this season. Kripke & Co have really mastered their baby. I find the show better and better every year and it’s gone to the point where I just can’t find one bit to complain about. Well, ok, maybe I’d like one really well written female character someday, but in the meantime I’m just fine the way it is. There aren’t much shows I’m crazy about these days and Supernatural comes right after Mad Men for me, which is a huge compliment. Gosh, I love this season!
Yeah, Dean screaming like a girl was priceless! And I fully agree, Supernatural is definitely one of the best thing on TV right now, it’s a shame it’s not getting all the credit & recognition it deserves, cause it’s really brilliant.
Now I feel like I should go back to season 2 and watch episode 15 (Tall Tales) again, which was also absolutely hilarious, and I loved how both brothers were making fun of each other… the memory of Sam, through Dean’s recollection of events, going “this is a very serious investigation, we don’t have time for any of your blah blah blahblah, blah blah blah blah blah…” just kills me every time!
