Supernatural: Wishful Thinking

By fred | November 7, 2008

Supernatural(S04E08) Week after week it keeps happening, every single episode so far is confirming that this season of Supernatural might just be the very best one to date. It’s been a long road since Sam joined his big brother into a never-ending fight (or will it end some day?) against the forces of Evil, and now both brothers are in very different and unique positions, each for different reasons.

Sometimes an episode of Supernatural can be very intense, very dark and strong on the whole mythology, and sometimes it’s a much lighter tone, even going for a completely hilarious tone on occasions. Often, it’s a perfect mix of different things, as was this week’s episode. Last week we ended things with Sam using his powers in front of Dean’s eyes, and they never got to talk about it.

This week, they still did not, and I’m not even sure they did during the time we were away. Could be that they don’t really feel the need to mention it, they have nothing more to add to what they previously said on that topic. But something has changed in Dean, over the past few weeks. When he came back from Hell, he didn’t remember a thing. He spent four long months down there, and “long” isn’t saying much when you know that’s like 40 years in Hell !

But Dean didn’t remember any of it, not one second. At least, that’s what he said, and I think he was not lying. — Actually, I’m not sure, but I even think Castiel might have mentioned how he made sure Dean did not remember anything, as a favor or something. Anyone remembers that as well ? Or am I wrong here ?

So I think Dean wasn’t lying. Not at first, at least. Because as time went by we’ve seen him having flashes, nightmares, it was like he started to see things, to remember. And when he was under a spell and when his fears started to come to fruition, when Lilith appeared to Dean, she said he remembered, she’s the one who told us those 4 months were like 40 years, and she said Dean remembered every second of it!

And we have seen him, recently, starring into the face of Halloween masks with memories coming to mind that weren’t happy ones, definitely not. You could read on his face that he was definitely remembering things, and Sam noticed it to, the nightmares and the alcohol. This week, Dean finally came clean and revealed that he did remember everything, as Lilith as told him — though I’m not sure whether or not it could actually be coming from her, somehow, from that spell, or not at all.

In a very clever twist though, Dean refused to talk about it, if only because there are no words to describe the things he saw. That little talk was really great, and I’m thinking that Dean’s words most definitely were meant to be applied as the way each brother feels towards the other one. Dean says he can’t tell Sam, that Sam cannot understand what happened to him, what is now a part of him, and I’m sure that’s about how Sam feels when it comes to his demon blood, and his powers. That he can’t tell Dean, that Dean couldn’t understand that part of Sam, that there are no words to describe it.
