Supernatural: The Magnificent Seven

By fred | October 8, 2007

Supernatural(S03E01) I’ll be honest, I was a little worried with all the news and rumors that have been circulating over the summer, regarding this new season. Not so much about the addition of the hot chicks to help ratings, or for some other reasons, but because I seem to never get interested that much into the main story, the serialized part. Not true for all series, but for many such as The X-Files, or simply Supernatural, the episodes I enjoy the most are always the ones that do not deal with it.

And after that big finale last season, dealing with the evil demon of the family, the father, and everything we got to see, I wasn’t sure how they would come back, but I was hoping that whole aspect of things would not be a major part of it.

And it wasn’t. And it was great. This episode had it all, and had the tone of those I like best. I’m not a fan of the new title, I liked the old, yellow letters better. But the kick-ass intro on AC/DC’s Hell’s Bells made me forget about this detail, and dive into a great season opener.

It had it all, and set things up for what should be a great season : the brothers are back on their famous car traveling all over the country, humor is back, promising new characters and, of course, lots of new demons, and ontop of that, as one demon mentioned : they might go from hunters to hunted, as they let go quite a bunch of new (kind of) demons all over the place.

A little fact that did put them on a very odd spot, as now other hunters are not inclined to be so friendly towards those who are responsible for the new war upon them all. All of that makes it for promising encounters in the future, although it does not mean everyone will be feeling that way.

Take one of the new girls, Ruby, the demon hunter we got to meet rapidly. Now that was a nice way to introduce her on the show, because basically we know nothing about her, but we have to appreciate her efficiency, at the very least. She followed Sam without being noticed, she came in right in time – recognized by some demon? – to kick ass in a way we never actually saw Sam and Dean do it : completely in charge, taking down three demons with what looked like ease, helped by that mysterious knife, and she left without a word, almost.

I don’t think they would have introduced her in a better way, and for sure she is no Jo, the blond from last season who kept whining about wanting to become a demon hunter, but was more trouble than help to the brothers, really.

I was also pleased that the show let go with its deep drama and dove back into humor, or at least embraced it, as it’s done brilliantly in the past. In that matter, the Se7en reference was perfect.

Of course I have to mention the deal, the one year deal that Dean used to have fun because, well, he’s got to make the most of it while he can. I think he was mostly using this as an excuse, it’s not like hitting on girls in bars was something he’s never done, but now Sam was going along with it. This will probably be source of a few laughs in the future though, but I sure hope he drops the “Go ahead, I’ll win you some time, I’m dead already” attitude, which is obviously pointless and feels pretty stupid, IMO.

But while their last conversation tend to say otherwise, it is pretty obvious than unless we’re watching the last season of the show, and we better not be, they will find a way out. I just don’t see Sam alone versus Demon Dean, or both of them demons. To their, and our, knowledge there’s no way out. Obviously, there is much they do not know, though, starting with Ruby’s magical knife.

Back on the road, with a vengeance. This should be fun.
