Supernatural: No Rest For The Wicked

(S03E16) Another season finale coming right up! But this one is different, because of a deal. For months and months now, this season we knew that Dean was going to die and go to Hell, where he’ll be turned into a demon. He made a deal, he sold his soul, and according to what everyone they could find, there was no way out. Then last week, we learn that Bella had a deal of her own, with the same demon, Lilith.
She tried to get out of it, but couldn’t. One last thing she told Dean before dying, was that Lilith own both their deals, and that there was a way out after all : kill the bitch! Of course she’s not your typical demon next door, and that may not be as easy of a job as it sounds. And now, time’s up, only a few hours left before Dean goes to Hell… begins the season finale!
I’m sure I should have said so earlier, before this episode actually airs, but thinking about about I was thinking that it was probably going to end with Dean’s death. Because when you think about it, we’ve been told repeatedly there was no way out, so much build up to only one way out : Dean has to die. Of course, at the last minute came the “killing Lilith” solution, but let’s face it : she’s the new leader in Hell, everyone (I mean demons) is afraid of her, there’s no way the boys, by themselves, without the Colt, during their first fight ever with her, could win.
So what better way to end this season, than with actually sending Dean to Hell ? And of course the first few episodes next season will be about saving him, bringing him back, somehow. This to say this was the perfect way to end the season, and while it wasn’t much of a surprise for me, it was still pretty awesome. Not that I enjoyed seeing Dean being killed, but you know what I mean.
Okay, let’s rewind a little : we opened with Dean having weird visions and fighting with Sam, and Bobby, over how they would handle the situation. And Dean was pretty determined not to let Sam do the same mistakes they did in the past. Indeed, so far whenever one of the Winchesters has been in really big trouble, someone else came to the rescue and lost his soul in the battle.
Their father is in Hell because of this, and Dean is heading that way in a few hours because of it. Dean knew this had to stop, he knew he was going to Hell, and there was no way he’d let Sam join that family reunion down there. It only made sense, when you think about it. So much that when there was only a few minute left, Sam was willing to do anything to get Dean out of his deal, you can bet your ass he’d have sold his soul without even thinking about it!
So they decided to play by their rules, and fight like they’ve been taught to.And the way they got to steal the knife from Ruby and trap her downstairs was pretty cool, the boys at their best — I just wished they had listen to what she had to say, just to know what she was asking.
Anyways, another very nicely played out was the reintroduction of some rock, or some Bon Jovi at least, and give Dean the ability to identify Hell’s bitches, since he was soon going to be one himself. I also liked to see Lilith “having fun”, there’s nothing creepier than a little girl playing covered in blood because someone wasn’t nice to her, and everyone terrified of being next.
Sadly, when it came down to the big face down, Lilith did let us down. I mean, there was all this build up, and in the end she didn’t appear to powerful or threatening to me. That little girl was creepy, but more in a demon of the week kinda way, not the in the way we’ve seen or heard of Lilith before, the one who for fun did not had her birthday everyday, but killed an entire town. Also, the switching body at will thing might not really help either.

Lilith acted the way she did while inside Ruby because she knew the knife could kill her if Sam got the drop on her. He could stab her pretty quickly. Lilith “knew” she could kill Sam, so from her perspective she wasn’t pressed for time. That’s why she was calm. If Sam is panicking that the hounds are about to skewer Dean, he’ll give her the knife if she says she can “try to fight off the hell hounds.” That’s precisely what she did.
When you think about it, what she did made perfect sense. Lilith killed the people at the end of “Jus In Bello” with her killer white light explosion. She thought it would kill Sam, too. When it didn’t she was shocked; then she got scared. That’s why she bugged out of Ruby’s body so fast in such a dramatic fashion. She can’t possess Sam because of the tattoo and she can’t kill him. If she possesses another family member, Sam’s gonna figure it out and he might stab her since she can’t kill him. It makes sense for her to bug out and leave for the time being.
I definataly think you are a bit confused about some of the things that happened in this episode. That was Lilith leaving Ruby’s body at the end, why would it be some random demon? That makes no sense at all. Lilith was shocked and that turned quickly to fear, she knew Sam was about to kill her and ran. Also we have never seen her switch bodies before - we did not see her go into Ruby - that was done off screen when Ruby went into a room by herself (i am guessing) or earlier even before Ruby turned up.
Finally this review really needs an edit - I came across so many simple grammer mistakes and sentences that made no sense.
What really makes me wander at the end of this episode is if Rudy is gonna come back in that same body. Because that would be a great opportunity to get rid of that awful actress while keeping an interesting character and get someone with, you know, charisma and talent (and who also doesn’t annoy the crew because she needs to go to rehab).
Katie Cassidy doesn’t need to go to rehab. That’s a terrible lie to tell.
Wasn’t she known for having some troubles during this season with alcohol or drugs? Whether she goes or not to rehab, that kind of problem does worry a production crew.
It makes no sense for it to be just a random demon no, I agree. But it doesn’t make much sense for Lilith to leave that way while she can do it way more rapidly and without even being noticed, was my point.
We never saw her switch, sure, but if the boys didn’t notice anything, if the mother who had her possessed child in her arms didn’t notice anything, I’m pretty sure it’s got nothing to do with that black smoke going out that way…
About Katie Cassidy, no, I think she got arrested once for DUI, that’s all. Not saying it’s nothing, but she doesn’t have any drug addiction problem, no…
Also, hmmm maybe a little spoiler-ish so if you’re allergic maybe you want to stop reading now, but I just heard that Cassidy should be back next season, actually. So there you go ;)
I’m a bit disappointed with this finale. If it were the series finale, I’d be happier with it.
I’m not happy with losing Bella, because I feel she adds a lot to the show (though, if we had to lose her, this is a very much in-character way). She’s sort of like the anti-Bobby, not to mention a talented and beautiful actress.
I also don’t like the fact that Dean got sent to Hell, because this sends the show next season into one of two different directions. One is the obvious one: that Sam spends the first several episodes successfully rescuing Dean from Hell; the second is that Sam goes on a downward spiral for several episodes until Bobby, Jo, or Ellen drag him out of it.
Of course, now that I think about it, a better way might be for Ruby to drag him out of his funk. That way, we can continue to see Sam tottering on that moral line between Good and Evil that so clearly exists in the Supernatural universe. :-) In any case, we really need another hunter for Sam to team with, and I really hope it’s Dean.
Now, just to briefly address the other comments, I’d like to mention that it’s not completely certain John Winchester is still in Hell. After all, he did manage to crawl out the Devil’s Gate at the end of season 1. In fact, it might be an interesting twist to either bring John back or to have John be the one who provides a way to rescue Dean from Hell.
Finally, I’d like to say that having Lillith as a main antagonist for next season seems like a fine way to focus the show. After Azaezel died, the boys were left with the possibility of taking on the whole of Hell. This kind of lead to the “demon of the week” format, which, while it can be good for a show or two, was not as good as the format where every several episodes the Winchesters would get a clue to Azaezel’s plans and whereabouts.
Overall, in terms of narrative structure, I guess I’m still happy with Supernatural. I just wish they didn’t have to send Dean to Hell. :/
Oh it has to be Dean! The show is all about the two brothers, and that cannot change.
But I like that Dean went to Hell, because after everything that happened/was said about that deal he made, for it not to happen would have been quite weird, like we were cheated in a way, I feel.
I think it’s great they went with it, I just hope they won’t indeed spend too much time with the brothers separated, cause otherwise that might affect the show, but I got faith.
About the “demon of the week” format, this one is a funny thing. It seems so many people out there are more and more liking heavily serialized show, so much as to feel like the weekly case/crime/demon/whatever format has to be “inferior” somehow.
Honestly, I don’t feel that way, I never did, and while I love serialized show (I mean, Lost is freaking awesome!) I don’t think a show needs to go there to be good.
There must be some serialization, a overall arc/story that goes on, of course, but it might go on while a weekly format takes place most of the time, and that’s fine.
For instance The X-Files had such a thing going on, and it was brilliant.
