Supernatural: Monster Movie

(S04E05) The world is coming to an end, and God himself doesn’t even know whether his angels will be able to prevent the evil doing at play in the dark, that’s why he had Dean brought back form Hell. This season Supernatural took a turn to the dark as things got a lot more serious and complicated for our boys, but last night, last night none of that really mattered.
Because last night even the Winchester brothers couldn’t save the world, so instead they decided to do what they actually could do, like in the good old days, fight some monsters. Plain and simple, have some fun in doing what they do best, like they’ve done for years, as Dean put it, it was time for a black and white case.
And that’s exactly what we got, that and so much more.
No Lilith, no Castiel, none of that this week, and the talented crew behind the show decided to pay a little tribute to the good old days of classic black and white horror movies, and boy do they do that well! This was an absolutely terrific episode, I loved every single second of it, from the opening credits with the old Warner Bros. logo to the last screen, with “The End” written on the screen.
I loved the take on old movie conventions, it was all there, of course the black and white colors, but also the music, sound effects, the characters’ reactions and mannerisms, the shot of the moon with skeletal trees in foreground, how Dracula, about to fry Dean, moved slowly, very very slowly towards the switch, just slow enough for someone to ring on the door, even the kid’s non-sense to get his girlfriend to go all the way right before the werewolf attacked, it was absolutely perfect.
Even better was that all along the way, this was still Supernatural and the boy were still the same, Dean obsessing with food and, of course, pretty blonde girls, while Sam was the serious brother following on leads and trying to find out what was going on. Hell, we even had Dean think back to his life, and how things had changed ever since he came back from Hell, how he fully embraced the idea on saving people, being on a mission, “a mission from God!“
It could have been gratuitous, but this show is better than this and it was actually explained by our monster of the week, making it all so much better. As was easily predictable, we had to deal with on of those damned shapeshifters. That became quite obvious by the time the werewolf attacked, because there wasn’t really a lot other possibilities left by that time, especially with the use of props. And our new shapeshifter was not sure of who he was, he started to convince himself he was actually Dracula, because he was all monsters, all monsters from the movies, where they are magnificent and feared.
The identity of the shapeshifter wasn’t too hard to guess, especially since they insisted quite a bit of the whole lipstick-on-the-napkin bit, but that’s not where the awesomeness of the episode was, it was not it what was going on, but how it was happening. It wasn’t so much that they did kill the bad guy in the end, or had the pretty blonde do it for them, it was how it happened and how Dracula remained committed to his character all the way til the end.
