Supernatural: Metamorphosis

By fred | October 10, 2008

Supernatural(S04E04) For some time Sam & Dean were “only” hunting demons and sending them back to Hell, fighting evil to make the world a little safer, but recently they entered a brand new game. It’s not really new, it’s been going on for a long time, longer than we first suspected actually, but now there are much bigger things at play, and for reasons yet unknown to us, they have been chosen.

Sam, in particular, has been chosen. But of course there’s a trick, he hasn’t been chosen by the good guys to save the world, quite the opposite in fact. As we’ve seen last week, no one knows why he – or the other kids – have been chosen, not do we know what Azazel has in mind for them. Actually, while Castiel said last week that he knew what had been done to Sam, only not why, made me jealous because I don’t think we know what has been done to Sam.

We know he developed powers, abilities that – with a little help of Ruby – he’s learn to use to send demons back to Hell. This week Sam told his brother that he had demon blood in his veins, pumping through his entire body, he told him that he could control his powers and use them do to good, not just sending demons to Hell but also sometimes/often saving the host. But we don’t really know what’s been done to Sam, not exactly.

Side note: Sam saving the host is good, but haven’t they done that before in the past, using rituals and whatnot ? And hasn’t it been established before that it was also depending on what the demon actually did to the “body” ? That they could pretty much make sure that when they leave the body, it can’t survive ? Didn’t the waitress he killed earlier this season died when Sam killer the demon in her ?

As is often the case on Supernatural, we have two things to talk about : this week’s demon, and the relationship between the brothers. The demon we met this time was a rugaru, and while it could have made for a pretty good episode on its own, of course what made this episode so good was how it related to Sam. Because Jack (a brilliant performance by Dameon Clarke who’s hunger could literally be seen growing on his face) had this thing inside of him, it was there, it was bad, it was growing, and Sam needed to think that Jack could control it, that he did not have to turn into a monster.

The real fights this week were Jack’s own fight with this monster growing inside of him, and of course the one between our brothers. After Castiel’s words last week, Dean followed Sam and eventually found out that he had been lying to him, that he’s been using his abilities to fight demons, and that he was working with no other than Ruby. Rightfully so, Dean was pissed. Probably even more because Sam lied than because of what he lied about.

We all know they both love each other and are willing to give up their own lives for each other, they might even have on occasion in fact, and yet it seems that Sam doesn’t fully realize that Dean’ feelings haven’t change despite this whole curse, that Dean isn’t “scared” of Sam, but worried about him. Just like Dean might not fully grasp how his constant and often aggressive questions on that area probably make Sam feel like a freak or something.

Bobby wasn’t around this week, so instead we got to meet another hunter, Travis. Travis has been hunting rugaru all his life, and he killed Jack’s father a few years back, without knowing that he had a son. And now he was here to finish the job, aka kill Jack. But Sam wasn’t willing to just jump there just yet, he wanted to give Jack a chance not to take that fatal bite, and fight this inner-monster and to be stronger than it is.
