Supernatural: Long-Distance Call
By fred | May 2, 2008
(S03E14) Finally, Supernatural is back !! I know there was already and episode last week, but as I said it was a piece of crap, really (and it saddens me to say so, cause I love this show, but facts are what they are), the worst episode of the entire series. So much that I decided to forget about it, it was nothing but a stupid thing called “Ghostfacers”, nothing else, and last night was the “real” return of the show I actually love, Supernatural.
And indeed, it was back! It wasn’t a very special episode, it didn’t reveal anything big, it was simply a good episode of Supernatural, with all the elements that we love about the show, and exactly what we want to find when tuning in. We had a new bad guy to kill, the boys sharing a few heart to heart conversations, plenty of jokes, Dean’s obsession with food, even a mention of our favorite Asian porn site ! What else could you ask for ?
I am really happy to see the show back, and it didn’t take long to make me feel good. Just the first scene with the boys, and them talking about their next case, Dean willing to go to Ohio look in what Bobby reported, while Sam thought they were on Dean’s case, even though it’s been a while now and they still haven’t got a clue as to if it’s only possible to save Dean from Hell, that was enough. It had everything: talk about Dean’s future, the confession that Ruby told Dean she couldn’t actually save him from Hell, a little joke (”We were actually talking about our feelings, and then our favorite boy bands, yeah we were talking a case!“), it had everything we love form this show, and everything that was actually missing last week.
And this week’s case was a pretty good one. Not only that, but with the bad guy calling people and passing as their dead relatives, trying to get them to kill themselves so he could feed on their souls, it was a perfect way to hear again from John, or as the boys call him, “dad”. Dean obviously wanted to believe that it was actually his father calling, it was blind faith but as he said, that’s all he got, and he’s really scared, scared of going to Hell, of turning into a demon himself, and while he may not see a point in keeping to ask any Professor they can find, he does think about this all the time.
So it made perfect sense for Dean not to sleep waiting by the phone, and to go through with it, not really focusing on the case and thinking that somehow he might be really talking to his father, whose time in Hell didn’t seem to have affected him that much so far, and that he could save his self. His fight over this with Sam was absolutely perfect, both reacted the only way they could, and while a little blind on the actual case of the week, Dean still hasn’t forgotten everything, and once he realized something was wrong, of course he didn’t kill the innocent guy sent there by the crocotta.
It was also nice to see the two boys fighting their own fight independently. Usually, they’re either together, or one of them comes to the rescue of the other one kicking in a door or killing some other demon some other place at the last minute. But it wasn’t really Dean Sam talked to before going in, so there was none of this this time, though they both worked things out on their own about at the same time. The fact that Sam was able to escape the crocotta and eventually kill him on his own is a good sign, if he has to continue the fight alone soon, but of course they will find a way out of that Deal, somehow, they have to.
The crocotta story was actually really good, both in that it wasn’t completely obvious who he was - I actually thought of some yet unseen creature hiding in the basement of the phone company more than any of the two guys we’d met - and of course the little rant about how he used to have to hide into the woods at night, and now just has to make a phone call, because if we used to have communities, now “you’re all so connected, but you’ve never been so alone“, was a perfect fit.
One little thing bugged me though : what’s the point of having to get them to kill themselves ? From what we saw, he needs to physically take their body and get their soul out of it, so it would make more sense to ask the girl to come to the cemetery, at night, where he could kill her and eat her soul, than to have her to take sleeping pills, which wouldn’t get her or her soul anywhere near him, wouldn’t it ?
That was a little odd to me, that or the fact that only the person he was talking to, or IM’ing, was apparently able to hear or see what he was doing. It would make more sense that when IMing the girl, anyone in the room could see it, but then why when the wife of the first victim picked up the phone, why didn’t she hear anything ? Those are two little things that bugged me a little, yet I didn’t mind it that much in the end.
I did not, because it was a good episode, and I was so happy to have the show back I’m willing to close my eyes on those little details. I’m thrilled the show is back, and I can’t wait for more. There really isn’t much time left this season, and I have to say, I have no idea where things will end, but I’m dying to find out !
Just a couple more things, because they made me laughs :
- I mentioned it already, but I always love it when Dean gets obsessed over food one way or another.
- The little conversation between Sam and Lanie, her not willing to appear as crazy and hi trying to get her to trust him, to talk, and not to call the police, was very nicely done.
- Loved it when Dean mentioned necrophilia as some hot girl passed by him…
- “What’s with the quoty-fingers ?“
