Supernatural: Lazarus Rising [season premiere]
By fred | September 19, 2008
(S04E01) There was no question, Dean was coming back. Yes, last season of Supernatural was all about the infamous deal that sentenced Dean to Hell after only one little year left, and despite many attempts the brothers couldn’t find a way out. So, what had to happen happened : Dean was sent to Hell. That was the last image of the season, that’s how we left things for the boys, Sam & Dean were separated. By death.
Dean was by roting in Hell, and while we all knew he would eventually come back, because Supernatural couldn’t be without him, the real question was to know when he would be getting back, and how. Who could do it, what would be the price ? Those were the questions, and that’s exactly what this fantastic season premiere was all about !
In pure Supernatural classic style, the show opened with a little reminded of past events to the rhythm of AC/DC, because that’s how the Winchester boys do it. And before we get into the episode any more, I have to praise Eric Kripke and his crew because that was probably the best season season opener the show ever had, and one of the best episode ever, nothing less!
Even better is that we didn’t get to wait and wait to find out about everything. We had questions, and those questions were the central focus of the episode. And while not all found an answer, this isn’t Lost and we’ve already learned a lot. If there’s a reason people love this show so much, and there are plenty actually, it’s all there, in those 42 minutes of awesomeness. It was great, thrilling, exciting, funny, it’s impossible to deny this is the best show on The CW right now, and it deserves more recognition than it gets.
Okay, moving on. Dean wakes up in a dark place, dig his way up to the surface only to realize that, yes, he’s out. He just walked out of his own grave, he’s back on Earth! Even better, he’s already got his favorite porn back! And as he puts it himself a little later, “I know, I look fantastic!” The reunion was pretty low key actually, no big display of emotions, just a big hug and they’re good to go. So Dean is back, and after the usual denial from both Bobby and Sam, both trying to kill him first, everyone had to face the truth : Dean is back.
For a moment I too doubted it was him, despite the Holy water thrown in his face and stuff, but soon it became obvious, because only Dean can walk out of Hell where he’s been tortured for a few months, and when asked how he’s feeling, simply go “I’m a little hungry“. Yeah, no doubt, that’s our Dean!
So first things first : Why? How? Who? What the Hell?? My very first thought as to who helped Dean get out was Ruby, and then quickly I also added on my list their father. Because I thought both were in Hell, powerful (though I don’t really know how things work down there), and (supposedly) on their side, so they’d probably do anything they could to “push” him out. Not that it was doable, but I was a bit surprised that it wasn’t even mentioned. Of course, soon enough eyes were burning and it seemed quite unlikely.
One thing that surprised me a lot was Sam. Yes, Dean looked fantastic, but so did Sam. I remember the last time he lost Dean, and while it turned out to not to be real, at the time he didn’t know that, and Sam went dark. He turned into a cold demon killer, he was not saying a word, he was cold, he was brutal, he was killing and killing, eating with a brother who wasn’t there, yeah it’d be fair to say he’d gone a little crazy on the side.
