Supernatural: Bad Day At Black Rock
By fred | October 22, 2007
(S03E03) Yes, I know, this one airs on Thursday in the US. But I don’t live there, add to that all the other series I had to watch as well, yes, it did took me that long. But I finally sat down and watched this baby, and I sure as Hell don’t regret it.
I’ve been enjoying this new season of Supernatural so far, like the past ones, and while it may not have been perfect all the time it is definitely a very good journey those two brothers have to offer us.
I’ll be quick since it’s not so fresh, but once again this was a very good episode. This show isn’t always funny, and that’s not a critic as it is not its goal, it’s no comedy. But I think all episodes show humor, even if it can be very little at times, and every so often one episode will have a full go at the comedic aspect. And they never miss.
When Supernatural plays the comedy part, you are guaranteed to laugh, really, and much more than while watching other series who claim to be sitcom, or comedy. Yes, Chuck, you’re on that list.
While the mystery of the week wasn’t the most mysterious of all, it didn’t mean it wasn’t a good one. And it made up pretty easy for its lack of monster by introducing the new girl, the lovely Bela (Lauren Cohan), or the “beautiful, funny and confident mercenary who lacks a conscience” as she was officially described. Yep, sounds like her.
And I have to be honest, while the plot was somewhat predictable it was still absolutely fun to watch, and I can’t wait to see more of her. And not just because she’s very cute and got a lovely accent, though forced to admit that demon Ruby seems to be a more interesting character at this moment, but we’ve also seen more her I guess.
Can’t wait for more of Bela, though, who’s pretty much a female version of Dean, with even less moral values. I’m not sure the two of them will ever get along. I mean she did steal from him/them, first the rabbit’s foot, then the money. Plus, she shot Sam! I just hope they do it good, not just another “they want some artifact that she’s got, or they need to borrow it while she is willing to steal it as well”. Though it probably will play out that way…
There were a few things that bothered me during the episode, like a reason why those two stupid thief were chosen by Bela, who seemed to be a very high-profile thief, or as she simply put it, “a great thief“. Or why they didn’t steal nothing else, I mean they surely didn’t look that smart, after after being shot they might have been inclined to get a little extra. But what the Hell…
The chase of the brothers was interesting too, especially in the whole “mission from God” aspect it evolved into. I’m sure this will eventually backfire on Gordon, that is if he let him live long enough once he’s out. I guess it was cool to see Gordon back, and obsessed about killing Sam, but with those damn stupid “previously” recaps right before the episode (God I hate those!) it was everything but a surprise, so spoiled fun wasn’t much fun here.
Either way, he’s obviously right, it’s all about Sam. I’m not saying Sam isn’t human or must die, but this all thing is about him, for sure, just ask Ruby! Can’t wait for a new confrontation fight between him and our boys!
Despite a pretty easy and simple resolution, just burned the cursed rabbit’s foot – which makes you wonder why, if so simple, the good old Dad didn’t think of it himself? – what a great, funny ride that was. From that first fight scene, absolutely hilarious, to a oh so lucky Sam and a Dean trying to cash in on it, to the misery Sam went through after he lost it, or after Bela stole it back should I say – nothing but pure fun.
I mean, the look on Sam’s face when he said “I lost my shoe” ? Priceless! It was so cool I almost forgive him for being so dumb later on, and trying to put off a fire using what has to be the worst, most stupidest method when you know you’re cursed with bad luck.
Anyways, as great as it was, I don’t think nothing could beat the confidence and coolness on Dean’s face when he came back to save his brother, fully aware of his new luck. “I’m Batman!” Oh Yeah!
I’m not sure why Sam didn’t mention to his brother all the deaths surrounding their mother, but I liked how after he mention trusting using a demon, namely Ruby, Dean was (again) all “You’re okay, right? I mean you’re feeling okay?” on him. Wondering if your brother is 100% Sam, aren’t we? Just like he might be…
Overall, a pretty awesome episode. I think we’ll see more of Bobby this season, which isn’t a bad thing per-se but we already have the girls, so let the boy alone a little wouldn’t be so bad either. Speaking of which, they have a new villain from within their own side to worry about. After all it’s only fair, given that a (blond) demon might be helping them.
Ok, enough talk, bring on the next one!
