Supernatural: Are You There God? It’s Me, Dean Winchester
By fred | September 26, 2008
(S04E02) Do you believe in God? I have to say this isn’t really the first question I would have thought of asking either Sam or Dean, but when you think about it they spend most of their time surrounded by some kind of religion, one way or another. As is often the case when there’s demon involved, to fight them you gotta hit the books – or the online library for time to time.
But it’s in the old books that you will find information about the demons, their powers, their weaknesses, and, more importantly, the rituals you need to follow in order to get ride of those things. Whether they want it or not, whether they are religious or not, religion is a very important part of their lives, so it might be worth taking the time to ask : do they believe in God?
After all, they do use Holy water from time to time, don’t they? So they must believe that, just like there’s evil in this world and the one below, there must exists some kind of Holiness. If when people die they can end up in Hell, much like Dean recently did, there has to be another place they could end up, it’s just the way nature works, there’s always some kind of balance in this Universe.
But God? The almighty Lord? Now that’s another thing. Last week Dean was told by Castiel, his savior, that the reason he was brought back from Hell was that God asked for it, and as his Angel Castiel obeyed. But it’s a really big pill to swallow for Dean, as it raises lots and lots of questions. Of course, there’s the one of the existence of a God in the first place, but even if we forget about that : why would He, or any power of Good, save Dean ?
Not that I, we, are against it, but what makes Dean so special ? Sure he saved lots of people, but I don’t think he’s alone in that case, Hell I would imagine their very own father was a good hunter who did save quite a few people as well, so what is it that makes Dean of all people so unique ?
It’s not like he had a very religious life, and never broke the law. He killed people, he went as far as making made a deal with demons, and unlike his brother he doesn’t seem to have any such things as special abilities or powers — or does he?
I have no idea what makes Dean so special or why he was saved, and to tell you the truth I’m not really sure I believe what Castiel is saying. Maybe he works for God, and Lucifer is waiting to walk free on the Earth as the apocalypse is coming up, but maybe not. Much like I Dean I have questions and reservations about this whole thing, while I like the idea of Angels, I’m not sure about God and Lucifer, but it becomes hard to really think of that with all that’s happening.
And what is happening, you ask? Well, the rising of the witnesses is, and that was a very nice occasion for us to see some old faces again, and to highlight how Dean & Sam have not only killed or been in some way responsible for the death of demons, but other people, innocent people, also died. It only makes sense, it’s unavoidable, because this is a war, this has always been a war, and wars are ugly.
Still, another interesting development in the whole mythology and story being set up for this new season, and of course the return of innocent people they couldn’t save, people blaming them, blaming Dean, for not saving them or even killing them, was a perfect echo to his original question : why save him ? Another really good question Meg brought up was Sam’s link to Ruby and how he was actually working with her, an actual demon.
I’m not sure we’ll hear from her soon, but there’s something going on with Sam, and one has to wonder whether or not Sam and Dean could, in the end, end up fighting one another. It seems unthinkable that either one would chose the dark side of the force, but if Dean raised interest from Angels of God, Sam was more the focus of demons, who tried to recruit him. And lately, he was working with one, and began to develop some abilities that neither we nor he, I think, knows where they’re coming from. Makes you wonder…
Anyways, this made for a very good episode, once again, and I really enjoyed to see those old faces, once again Supernatural rewards his long-time fans, and we love that. In the final fight it seemed a little odd maybe that only those three people would show up, not more, or that for a moment the girls who were after Bobby seemed to be missing, but I guess it didn’t really matter anyway, killing the hunters was more of a bonus, all that really mattered was that a seal was broken.
Because the rising of the witnesses was a sign, a sign of the Apocalypse. Bobby first, and then Castiel confirmed that, that it was actually one of the 66 seals that must be broken in order to get no other than Lucifer himself to walk free. This season, the boys aren’t just fighting some demons, or some very bad demons, because Lilith is trying to bring the Devil himself out, and that’s why Castiel and other Angels are, for the first time, walking among them.
Again, when you know that many demons, starting with Lilith, were very much interested in Sam, you have to wonder whether he might really be the key or not. Maybe Castiel saved Dean because in the end, Dean will have to be the one who stops, saves, or kills Sam.
Either way, I have no idea what’s coming but one thing for sure is that it sounds awesome, so far this season is off a great start and I can’t wait to find out what the big picture really is about and what’s coming next !!

Things I loved about this episode:
Dean’s epic battle to digest proof that God, angels and Lucifer really exist.
http://redlightnaps.wordpress.com/2008/09/26/supernatural-are-you-there-god/
That the episode’s name is a play off a Judy Blume novel. Of all the pop culture references Dean and Sam make, I’d never thought they’d reference Judy Blume. Not really the Winchesters style.
Loved that Bobby had built his own panic room just because he had a “weekend off.”
I loved that Bobby consulted the Bible for research as he called revelations “for tourists.”
I was actually afraid for Bobby. I can’t imagine what the boys would do without Bobby around.
My favorite line was when Dean tells Castiel that he thought angels were “like Michael Landon, not dicks.”
