South Park: Who Is The Coon?

By fred | March 19, 2009

South Park(S13E02) Last week’s episode wasn’t any kind of bad, but ended up being disappointing to me, mostly because it was a season premiere and, as such, I have to admit I expected more than just a typical South Park episode, I had hopes for something different, special, and even more hilarious than usual. Now this week there’s no more such thing as a season premiere, it’s just another episode of the (very fresh) new season.

I guess that means I’m not really allowed to say I was hoping for more than the typical SP episode, and complain about how “ordinary” (for South Park) this episode was might not sound fair. And yet, here I go… — but I won’t complain about the fact that this is the kind of episode you might expect from the show, or that they’ve been down the road of superhero before, and I was glad they weren’t forgotten BTW.

My biggest issue with this episode, would just be on the comedy aspect of things. Sure some things were funny, but overall I thought this episode was merely okay. I was not laughing the entire time, just a little laugh here and there, but I don’t even think there were any such thing as a laugh out loud moment, one of those I usually laugh so hard I need to pause the episode if I don’t want to miss out on anything.

This is why I love South Park so much, why I usually can’t wait to watch a new episode : because it’s so funny it hurts, because it’s too funny for me not to pause it a few times, otherwise I miss out of jokes, because I can’t keep a straight face, I’m rolling on the floor instead. This week, Cartman was “The Coon” and, of course, while nobody cared of all the “rape victims” he “saved” he wanted them to, but this just wasn’t very funny, despite influences/references to The Dark Knight or Watchmen.

In the end the only thing that I feel can be said about this episode, is to wonder about the identity of Mysterion — which in itself might be funny, as even we don’t care about the Coon, only Mysterion. Poor fat bastard!

All along I thought (or hoped) Mysterion would turn out to be Kenny, and I loved that they didn’t actually revealed who it was, because that face could have pretty much been anyone’s. My take on this, is that it was either Kenny (still rooting for him) or some unknown kid, one we never saw before and whose name wouldn’t mean nothing to us, as he’s never been seen or mentioned ever before.

What I also believe, is that the kid who revealed his face as Mysterion, was Kyle. At least that’s what I thought was the whole point of him coming to him for help : to have Kyle put on the mask only to take it off, so that everyone thinks it was Kyle, so that Cartman believes it, but the real Mysterion is still out there, fighting crimes while no one knows about it…

But I have to say, and that’s probably because – again – this episode wasn’t all that good, that in the end if we were to never hear of Mysterion (or the Coon) ever again, I would be fine. I’m not really dying to find out what happened there or who was behind the mask, I’m just hoping that next time, whether or not the episode is exactly what you might expect from the show, I just hope it will be funny, but really funny, hilariously funny, the kind of funny that makes your stomach hurts and requires you to hit pause otherwise you can’t keep up.

Because really, that’s how I like my South Park, and I haven’t really got any of that so far this season…

What did everybody else think?

i feel you on that… good point… i feel the same way sometimes… although, i feel as if the show has lacked luster for awhile… i mean, every plot seems as if it is a jock off of something else… sure, there is the south park flare there, but despite that there is pretty much no originality anymore as compared to south park’s earlier years…
i want to see some south park comedy that isn’t just about current events and whats around the world today… i have had enough of the world as it is every, i do not need south park to remind me of how bad it is… what’s next?

I find it amazing that somebody like you is writing reviews for Southpark. To inform you of your ignorance, this was the second episode of the season…not the premiere. Why don’t you take a little more time on these reviews so you don’t you look so stupid when you write simple little mistakes. You also start your review saying this episode “wasn’t any kind of bad” and end by saying “this episode wasn’t all that good”. Just pick one or the other and go with it.

Right, that’s what I said: “Last week’s episode wasn’t any kind of bad, but ended up being disappointing to me, mostly because it was a season premiere…

you’re pretty retarded. It can not be Kyle on account of Mysterion asked Kyle for help. Did you miss this scene while you where scratching your butt?

Kenny: He’s too poor to afford the outfit

    Kyle: He’s a jew

Stan: MAYBE, although nothing points to this

Craig: Definately, he was tired in class (up late fighting crime ofc) and not only that when he is revealed, the tone in Cartmans voice suggests its him.
