South Park: Tonsil Trouble

By fred | March 13, 2008

South Park(S12E01) I was pretty excited about the return of South Park, not (just) because with the writers’ strike there’s a clear lack of comedy on the air these days, but first and foremost because this is South Park ! No matter what, those guys are always able to come up with the funniest shit you could not even imagine, and they really have their way to create one episode that is going to be hilarious. Not once or twice, but for the full half-hour, 20 solid minutes of hilarity like you don’t find anywhere else.

I love it, I love this show, and I was really excited to see it back. Sometimes South Park have missed, not often but on occasion they’ve had episodes that didn’t work, that weren’t funny (at all). This episode opened with no other that Eric Cartman, and I guess you just can’t go wrong with that fat ass !

Before the actual episode started, we were treated with a nice brand new intro, and it was a really good one. At first I wasn’t sure about having the boys come up and sing their lines, but it turned out pretty good and you have to love all craziness from the past years spreading around in the background.

This was another really awesome episode, and like so many in South Park it came with a message. Today they dealt with AIDS, not something they never did before, but more than the disease itself they decided to focus on the way both the media and we ourselves deal with it. Like with anything else, the media dealt with AIDS and focused on it when it was “in”, but now it’s all over and we basically don’t care about it.

And even though there still is no cure and people still die of AIDS every day, thank God it’s mostly poor people, Africans and people for third world nations that are mostly affected by it. When they found out the kids had AIDS, people reacted by saying how “retro” of them it was, or just going to say that “These days I think I’d rather have AIDS than cancer” !

It was all about the way we now ignore AIDS, like it’s a thing from the past and doesn’t really exists anymore. Or that was for the first part of the episode, because then they found a cure : money. How awesome was that ? Of course there is no real cure for AIDS, but it is a given fact that people with lots of money can live a lot better & longer than poor people can, not to mention the millions dying in Africa. And that scene when the guy came in his big fat SUV all happy to tell them there’s now a cure for AIDS, all they have to do is inject themselves $180.000 directly into the bloodstream ! Freaking genius!

South Park is one of the rare shows that can do such a thing : talk about AIDS, the way we deal with it, remind us that it is still a disease very much alive and deadly, and go on about how we, in our advanced societies, are able to practically ignore it while it is killing people every day in third world nations who have no way to fight the virus, and all of that while being absolutely hilarious !

Cartman going all nuts at the hospital after he found it he was infected, his little Philadelphia look from then on, Butters kissing Cartman, how Kyle would couldn’t stop laughing, the “I’m not sure, I’m HIV-positive” line, the benefits no one cared about, it was all hilarious. Of course Cartman would just go on and infect Kyle with the virus, you couldn’t expect any less from the boy who had someone ate his parents in front on Radiohead ! Though I wonder what was the best : Cartman infecting Kyle, or the way people reacted to that, only asking him to apologize. And then, the big threat : find a cure for AIDS or I’ll break your X-Box !

This was exactly why we all love South Park, men does it feel good to have this show back !! I love it, I can’t wait for the next one, and now I’m going to watch it again because I just love it!

Fuck you Jimmy Buffett! You fucking suck! Fuck you mom, I have fucking AIDS!
