South Park: Eat, Pray, Queef

By fred | April 2, 2009

South Park(S13E04) This episode aired on April 1st, a day otherwise known as April Fools Day. This is true everywhere, not just in the South Park universe, but of course it does have a special meaning for fans of the show, as one time, about 11 years ago to the day, a new episode was coming up. Back then it was the second season premiere, and all fans were waiting for the answer, for Cartman’s Mom Is Still A Dirty Slut.

But instead, as an April Fools joke, we got a Terrance & Phillip special. If you remember that, you probably remember how frustrated you were back then, and it will then be no problem to understand how the boys felt this week, when they were actually waiting for their Canadians fart buddies, and in the same day it got replaced by some other crap.

I guess this episode was a lot about South Park itself, referencing old times and commenting how now lots of cartoons are trying to do what they do, and go for the dark humor or shock value. It’s probably not a problem, they can do what they want, but one thing they should always try to do, however, because it’s pretty much the reason we all tune in to begin with, is be funny.

Thing is, with the episode, there weren’t a lot of laughs. I feel that, except for last week’s episode, so far this season hasn’t really be all that great/funny. Not that any of the episodes were really terrible or a huge failure, but it was disappointing simply due to a lack of laughs. They can be meaningful and filled with great lessons or commentaries about the current state of our society all they want, in the end I think what we first want when watching the show is laughs, and it used to be hilarious.

Used to, because this week maybe there was a funny fart here (but of course no such thing as a funny queef there) and I loved seeing the boys’ faces when they found out there wouldn’t be their long awaited episode, or seeing poor Butters running like hell after he got “attacked” the way he did, but most of it wasn’t really funny. I also loved the commentary on TV, and how T&P were told they made the network, and were now fired.

But overall it’s like that very last scene when they all got “farts & queefs.” It felt like all they were doing was repeating themselves yet again, as if the hundreds of times it had been done in this very episode already weren’t enough, but besides that, it wasn’t funny. It was old, maybe a bit boring at this point, but not funny.

It’s a shame, and I know they can do much better than this, they just did it last week and I hope they can pull it off again, alas so far this season doesn’t seem to be very inspired nor funny.

What did everybody else think?
