Scrubs: My Nah Nah Nah

By fred | March 19, 2009

Scrubs(S08E11) It’s been a while since we last saw Scrubs, but finally the show was back – on a new night and with only one episode a week, so it’ll last longer. That’s the good news of this schedule move, the “bad” news is that with only one episode on, if it doesn’t work all that well, there no way for the show to redeem itself until next week.

And, alas, this episode wasn’t all that good. I’m not sure I could exactly list all the reasons why, but this episode felt a bit off, and different from what we had been getting so far this season, which was pretty good. But this time, it was a miss.

Where this season we often haven’t got to see the entire cast featured in one episode (to reduce cost), at first I assumed, since we saw pretty much everyone very early on, that Eliot would be the missing one this week. That’s what I thought for about tow third of the episode, where out of nowhere she popped up! It was surprising, but unfortunately it wasn’t that good of a surprise.

Because all she did was repeat again how she and JD were in a relationship, so that it could be said – again - how nobody cares because they been there, done that one too many times before already. That felt really old to me, not because those two have been on again off again long enough, but because I’m pretty sure we had the exact same thing happen this very season already : the two of them happy to be back together, albeit in a more mature relationship, only to find that everybody else didn’t give a crap about it, and everyone to make fun of how it’s been done before.

It might not have been Jordan who said it the last time, and I might not exactly remember who it was who did it, but I’m pretty sure it’s been done, earlier this season. Truth is, even the global theme of this episode felt like something we’ve already seen on Scrubs, and Cox wearing his wedding ring and Jordan getting pissed about it, only to wear hers by the end, didn’t work on me as well as it was intended to I think. Also, it wasn’t very funny either, despite the Janitor’s involvement.

One other thing I did not like with the Sportscenter bit. I’m guessing it was a way to thank ABC or something, but it felt way too much of a product placement kinda situation, it was too much, it was too long, and it wasn’t very funny.

Oddly enough, while pretty much the entire cast was featured in this episode, the ones missing where the ones I found myself looking for. Of course I was delighted to see the Janitor, he’s always lots of fun to have around, but I missed Ted, especially now that he’s in a relationship, and I have to say I found it quite odd that none of the (new) interns were there. Not just because I’ve grown to like Denise very much, but the fact that not one of them was seen, it just gave a weird vibe to the episode, like it wasn’t really part of this new season somehow, despite Kelso not working there.

It was JD and Turk doing their thing, Eliot being all cute as she can be, the Janitor making us laughs and letting his girlfriend be openly crazy, Cox having relationship issues with Jordan and dealing with patients (an not his new responsibilities as Chief), and there weren’t any of the interns. Also, seemed to me there were a lot more of JD’s fantasies than so far this season, and when Turk started – for real – to actually do the dance to the father instead of talking about the kid’s condition, it didn’t feel right, or like the new, more serious tone of this season.

It was like an odd thing that didn’t really belong in this season, all along I felt like, despite the reminders that we were in the middle of season 8 (mostly reminded by people pointing out stuff, see Jordan about Cox’s new position, or Eliot about her & JD) this didn’t really fit there. I’m not sure why, but that’s how I felt all along…

All in all not a bad episode, but not a very good one either. But, whether it’s Cox and Carla, I’ll always have a good laugh at the fact that JD is a girl!

What did everybody else think?
