Scrubs: My ABC’s

By fred | January 28, 2009

Scrubs(S08E05) So… if you’ve been following this season of Scrubs, this episode might have felt somewhat odd and out of place, like it didn’t really belong there. Not that it didn’t feel like an episode of Scrubs, but it’s on the continuity side of things that it didn’t feel quite right. And after looking into it, I actually found out that it makes sense, because those weren’t supposed to air in that order.

This episode, My ABC’s, was apparently actually originally written as the season premiere, while the next one – My Cookie Pants – was meant to be the second episode. But instead, they decided to make some little adjustments both in those episodes as well as in My Jerks and My Last Words and to invert them, thinking (I guess) that the later were stronger episodes.

This is why this episode featured such a large cast, whereas recent episodes had one or more cast members missing (although Ted was nowhere to be seen). And of course, this has a quite odd side effect on things, as this episode was an introduction, or a re-introduction now, of the new interns. Except that we’re now 5 episodes in, and some things didn’t quite match what happened already.

For instance, while Elliot did made a note that she and JD were dating again, the whole plotline with her not realizing her intern Katie was actually manipulating her to get ahead was deeply out of touch with past episodes where this had already been established.

In the same way, it wasn’t actually the first time JD called Denise “Jo” after the character from Facts Of Life despite her reaction to it, and all of that felt quite wrong. I’m not going to say that they shouldn’t have aired My Jerks as the season finale, but when they decided to do so they probably should have realized what it would mean and maybe adjust/rewrite part of episodes such as this one so that things continue to make sense.

Other than that, the Muppets were a fun guests this week, and thanks to JD’s fantasies actually proved to be a perfect fit for the show, and the new interns… well, I hate most of them. Ed is just annoying as Hell, and that even without considering that he’s lazy as Hell and doesn’t even try and yet still does better than most, it’s just the way he is that’s annoying. Granted, sometimes it makes for really funny jokes, but it’s also very annoying you want to beat him up or something — or at least I do.

Plus, the way he seems not to case about anything, not even paying attention to what’s happening or respecting anyone around, isn’t gonna help. And Katie, well we all know how she is, we’ve seen her little talk with Carla. But I have to admit, while she can be pushing it sometimes, I actually really like Denise and the way she deals with things. Or non-caring attitude just cracks me up, and while some (”big head”) I can’t really stand, she’s becoming a favorite of mine.

As always our friend the Janitor was pretty awesome, and hilarious, and I loved Eliot attacking JD just so Cox wouldn’t or how she and Turk made fun od JD’s new beard. And it wouldn’t be Scrubs if in the middle of all those laughs we didn’t had a patient actually dying – unlike in all the other medical show in television, you known the ones under “drama” – and JD doing his best to deal with things, and death, which isn’t always easy when you have “Jo” by your side. “Sucks to be him!

What did everybody else think of this episode ? Were you really confused/annoyed by the continuity “oddities” or not so much ?
