Reaper: The Leak

(S01E17) We’re getting close to the end of the season – next week will be the season finale – and many many things are evolving on the show. It’s not really a surprise, because it’s always moving, it’s the end of a season, and many things had to be resolved or answered at some point. Also, this was pretty much the first time ever that now Andi was part of the team.
And like in many shows right now, this episode was also setting things up for the big finale, putting people in the right place so that some kind of final big fight can proceed, ending with a bang right at the last second of next episode, leaving us hanging for more until next season comes, which we know will happen — even though The CW were stupid enough to only order 13 episodes for a midseason airing. Well, better than nothing I guess…
Many of the different stories going on were resolved, or are now on their way there after this episode. First let’s talk about the main thing this episode revealed, the one thing we’ve all being suspecting for a while now without having any concrete evidence of : Sam is the Devil’s son !
And it only make sense : it explains why they share this so special and intimate relationship, because the Devil doesn’t “waste his time” speaking to anybody else, especially not some employee he just bought the soul of. No what made Sam so special, what made the Devil care and even grant him favor, was that they are linked to one another by more than just a contract.
This also brought us an answer we were all dying for : why the Hell did Sam’s father burned down some pages from the contract, and what did those pages say ! Well, now we know, it was all about the real identify of Sam’s father. Which means that it’s not just your usual “sell the soul of your first child” contract that Sam’s parents signed, and apparently they did so knowingly, at least on his father’s part. You also have to wonder what does it actually means, to be the son of the Devil ?
Didn’t we meet his daughter earlier on ? Why did the Devil need a contract to have a son ? What else could be hidden inside all those pages, especially in the things written in some very very small font ? Is Sam actually sharing DNA with the Devil, or is it more of a succession thing ?
One thing for sure is that not only do we know about Sam, but Tony and his army of demons do too. This makes things so much more interesting, because now they know the Devil actually cares about Sam, more than he would say, so they have a way to pressure him. Of course, Sam doesn’t know and it’s probably best it stays that way. It’s one thing to accept your fate, that your parents sold your soul to the Devil and now you have to collect escaped souls and send them back to Hell; but it’s another to find out your father isn’t actually who you think it is, because you’re the son of the Devil, destined to maybe turn all demonish and rule over Hell !
But Sam’s unawareness is a good thing for Tony, because he knows Sam is on their side, he knows that he wants out, that he’s ready and willing to betray the Devil, and he knows that at the same time the Devil isn’t ready to let him die or be hurt. This could also be shaping up things for next season : maybe Sam won’t just be tracking down souls to send them to Hell, maybe he’ll also have demons going after him. I mean, if the word got out that he’s the Devil’s son, any demons who wants to hurt the Devil will now who to turn to…
Other than that, and Andi first stakeout, we had a few other things going on. First, the soul of the week : very charismatic soul, very fun story, and actually from very early on I knew Gladys was helping him, because of a little mistake I made. The first time Sam, along with Andi, delivered the vessel – and I kept wondering all along why he never seemed to include the actual picture in there, but… – as they were leaving you could see Gladys taking it the camera and putting it in, but I actually thought she was taking it out and not sending it down there. I could have hit rewind to make sure, but I did not and so from that point on I was convinced she was the leak.
